Chapter 26 - The Shadows in the Fog

Three days later, the world outside the hospital was in an absolute frenzy.
The headlines on every major financial newspaper and news broadcast read like a thriller: *THE FALL OF THE STERLING DYNASTY: PATRIARCH DEAD, HEIR ARRESTED, MISTRESS FACES 25 YEARS.*
Dominic, stripped of his bail after the revelation of his overseas shell companies and direct complicity in Leo’s abuse, was locked away in a maximum-security remand facility, awaiting a trial that would ensure he spent the next two decades behind bars.
Brooke’s testimony had turned state’s evidence, but prosecutors refused to drop the aggravated child abuse charges. She was going away for a very long time.
Yet, as I sat in the penthouse suite of the Grand Regent Hotel—secured by Julian’s most trusted private security team—I reviewed the financial forensics provided by our forensic accountants.
"Look at this," I said, showing the tablet to Julian as he entered the living room carrying a cup of tea for me.
Julian leaned over the table, frowning. "What am I looking at?"
"The secondary accounts Arthur drained before he set the mansion to blow," I pointed out. "Three transfers occurred *after* the explosion at the cliff. One at 3:14 AM to a private holding firm in Panama. Another at 4:45 AM to a maritime logistics company based out of Macau."
Julian’s face darkened. "Automatic scheduled wire transfers?"
"No," I replied, pointing to the cryptographic digital signature on the screen. "Manual overrides. Authorized using Arthur's private biometric key."

Julian stared at the screen, his hand tightening into a fist. "He didn't hit the rocks. Someone had a boat waiting beneath the cliff overhang."
"Arthur Sterling is alive," I said, cold fury replacing any lingering trace of fatigue. "He sacrificed his ancestral home, his son Dominic, and his mistress just to fake his death and slip out of the country."
