Chapter 15 - Brooke’s Poisonous Bargain

The heavy brass lamp struck the intruder with a sickening thud. The man grunted in agony, staggering sideways and dropping the chemical cloth onto the floor.
Before he could recover, Leo woke up, screaming in terror as the flashes of lightning illuminated the room.
"Mommy!"
"I'm here, baby! I'm here!" I yelled, dropping the lamp and pulling the intruder's own tactical knife from his utility belt with blinding speed. I slashed wildly, cutting across his forearm. The man backed away, clutching his bleeding arm, cursed under his breath, and dove through the shattered balcony window, disappearing into the torrential rain outside.
Down the hall, a gunshot cracked—sharp and deafening.
"Julian!" I screamed, shielding Leo with my body, burying his face into my chest as he sobbed hysterically.
Footsteps hurried toward the bedroom. Julian appeared in the doorway, his breathing ragged, a smoking pistol in his hand. His shirt was torn and his knuckles were bloody, but he was alive.
"Marcus took down the driver outside," Julian said, his voice shaking with adrenaline as he rushed toward us, dropping to his knees and wrapping his arms around both me and Leo. "The perimeter is clear. The police are already en route."
Leo clutched Julian’s jacket, burying his small face into Julian’s shoulder. "Uncle Julian... bad men came back..."
Julian closed his eyes, his voice choked with raw emotion as he kissed Leo’s forehead. "No more bad men, Leo. I swear to you. Uncle Julian won't let anyone hurt you."
Twenty minutes later, state troopers and forensic teams flooded the estate. One intruder was dead in the hallway; the other had escaped over the sea wall into a waiting speedboat. But the dead man's phone yielded a crucial lead: an encrypted message sent from a burner phone traced directly to an inmate visiting terminal at the Federal Correctional Institution for Women in Danbury.
The person who had coordinated the entry codes for our property was Brooke.
"Brooke?" I whispered, staring at the evidence log in disbelief. "How could Brooke possibly have the security codes to this estate? She's locked in a maximum-security block!"
"She didn't get them from outside," Julian said grimly, looking at the technical readout. "She had them because Dominic owned this property through an offshore trust five years ago, before he gave it to Brooke as a secret holiday home. When Dominic went to prison, Arthur liquidated Dominic’s assets, but Brooke still remembered the master blueprint and original bypass codes."
"I need to see her," I said, my voice dead and cold.
"Clara, she’s toxic," Julian warned. "She hates you. She ruined Leo’s life for two years while you were away."
"Which is exactly why she is going to talk," I replied.
The next morning, I sat across from Brooke in the cold, sanitized glass cubicle of the federal prison.
The former high-society mistress looked unrecognizable. Her once-flawless blonde hair was thin and greasy, pulled back into a pathetic ponytail. Her designer cheekbones were hollowed out by prison food, and her manicured nails were bitten down to the quick. But her eyes still burned with the same vile, jealous malice that had poisoned my marriage.
"Look at you," Brooke sneered through the perforated speaker, leaning forward against the stainless steel table. "The triumphant Clara Vance. Come to gloat while I rot in this cage?"
"You sent men to kidnap my four-year-old child last night, Brooke," I said, my voice dangerously calm, devoid of any emotional fluctuation. "You gave Arthur Sterling the layout of the coastal house."
Brooke laughed—a dry, grating cackle. "Arthur promised me a retrial. He promised me ten million dollars and a private jet out of the country the second he gets custody of the boy."
"Arthur is lying to you," I stated bluntly. "Arthur doesn't leave loose ends. The moment he takes Leo and unlocks the sixty-billion-dollar trust, you won't be on a private jet. You'll have an 'accidental' overdose in this cell. You know Arthur. He killed Dominic's father thirty years ago to take the company. You think he cares about Dominic’s discarded mistress?"
Brooke’s laughter died instantly. Her eyes darted sideways, a flicker of genuine terror piercing through her arrogance.
"You don't know what you're talking about," she stammered.
"I know Arthur needs something inside Leo's possession," I said, leaning closer to the partition. "He didn't just want the boy. The kidnapper had a list. What was Arthur looking for, Brooke? Tell me, or I will personally ensure that your protective custody status is revoked by sunset."
Brooke swallowed hard, her hands trembling as she pressed them against the cold metal table.
"It’s not in the house, Clara," Brooke whispered, her voice cracking with fear. "It’s in the antique music box Dominic gave Leo on his third birthday. Dominic hid the master ledger key inside it. The ledger that proves Arthur has been laundering money for international cartels through the shipping fleet. Dominic kept it as blackmail to protect himself from Arthur."
My mind raced. The music box.
"Where is it?" I demanded.
May you like
"Dominic took it the day before you came back from Singapore," Brooke whispered, tears of terror finally welling in her eyes. "He buried it in the family vault at the Sterling ancestral estate. Arthur doesn't just want the boy for the trust... Arthur is terrified that Leo knows where the key is."
