Chapter 55 - The Wrath of the Matriarch

The morning sun had barely crested the hills of Chianti when Marcus finished patching the bullet wound in his shoulder. Outside, the smoke from the downed helicopter and the ruined vineyard curled into the crisp Italian sky.
Leo was sleeping peacefully, his breathing deep and even for the first time in his life. The bruises that had marred his knees and wrists—the cruel reminders of Brooke's sadistic reign—seemed faint now under the miraculous regenerative effects of the serum.
"We have four hours before Eleanor’s heavy reinforcements reach the outskirts," Julian said, laying out an encrypted satellite terminal on the dining table. "She didn't anticipate Clara clearing the transponder. In her eyes, Leo is no longer a tool to be reclaimed; he is a loose end that threatens her entire legacy."
"Then she made a fatal mistake," I said, walking into the room. I had washed the blood from my skin and donned fresh black tactical gear, my long hair tied back tightly. "She thought I was running to hide my child. She doesn't understand that a mother running to protect her son is just gathering momentum to strike back."
Sarah looked up from the table, her eyes red but fierce. "What do we do, Clara? Eleanor controls half the private banks in Zurich, three private armies, and the highest judges in the European tribunal. You can't just shoot her."
"I don't intend to just shoot her," I said with chilling composure. "I intend to dismantle everything she loves, brick by brick, dollar by dollar, until she is crawling on her knees just like she forced my son to crawl."
I turned to Julian. "When Lucian opened that vault, I didn't just take the serum. While Julian was fighting the guards, I plugged my data-leech into the vault’s primary ledger."
I pulled a sleek silver drive from my pocket and tossed it onto the glass table.
"This contains seventy years of the Castiglione syndicate's offshore accounts, bribery ledgers, and the true ownership titles of the Sterling conglomerate that Lucian stole from my father. Lucian was just Eleanor's front man. Brooke was just Eleanor’s disposable hound."
Marcus’s eyes widened as the terminal decrypted the drive. "Clara... this isn't just money. This is the master registry of the Syndicate's secret summit. They are meeting tonight in Venice. The heads of all seven European crime cartels, gathering to celebrate the coronation of Eleanor’s chosen successor."
"Who?" Sarah asked.
A file opened on the screen. A photograph of a man with cold, calculating eyes appeared—Julian’s estranged brother, Victor Vance.

Julian’s fists clenched until his knuckles cracked. "Victor was the one who sold out my tactical unit five years ago. He was Eleanor’s favorite weapon all along."
"Then we have our battlefield," I declared, my eyes burning with unwavering resolve. "Tonight, we don't defend. Tonight, the Sterling legacy takes back its throne."
