Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Glass Tower

Hearing the name *Jonathan Cross* sent a seismic jolt through my core.
I stood up immediately, leaving Ethan sobbing at the metal table without looking back. Maxwell held the door open, following me out into the blinding Miami sunshine as our armored Maybach pulled up to the curb.
"Jonathan Cross," Maxwell murmured the moment the privacy glass rolled up. "I haven't heard that name since your father’s heart attack six years ago."
"My father told me Jonathan Cross died in a private yacht accident off the coast of Monaco," I said, my pulse racing as memories rushed back.
Jonathan Cross had been my father’s founding partner thirty years ago. Brilliant, charismatic, but inherently ruthless, Cross believed in predatory acquisitions, corporate espionage, and breaking legal boundaries. When my father discovered Cross had secretly leveraged Zenith’s client capital into illicit arms trade financing in the late nineties, my father launched an internal coup, ousted Cross, and stripped him of his shares.
Two years later, news arrived that Cross’s yacht had exploded in the Mediterranean. No body was ever recovered.
"He staged his death," I realized aloud, cold dread mixing with boiling rage. "He spent twenty years in the shadows building Aegis Vanguard, waiting for my father to die, waiting for me to be isolated, and using an idiot like Ethan as a trojan horse."
Julian’s voice suddenly crackled through the secure car speaker. "Claire, are you in the vehicle?"
"Yes, Julian. I'm with Maxwell. What is it?"
"We have a catastrophic market anomaly," Julian said, his voice laced with rare urgency. "Zenith’s European depository receipts opened trading an hour ago. Somebody is aggressively shorting forty million shares through synthetic derivatives. They are simultaneously dumping forged documents onto the financial dark web claiming Zenith’s lithium extraction patents are completely fraudulent."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "The stock price?"
"It dropped fourteen percent in twenty minutes," Julian reported. "The New York Stock Exchange opens in two hours. If this contagion spreads to our primary shares at the opening bell, Zenith will trigger a margin liquidation cascade. We could lose billions before lunch."
I looked at Maxwell, whose jaw was set like iron.
Jonathan Cross wasn't just trying to steal a company; he was orchestrating a full-scale digital blitzkrieg to bankrupt my family’s legacy before the world could even process the news of Ethan’s arrest.
"Julian," I ordered, my voice turning into steel. "Convene our quantitative trading desk. Mobilize the sovereign wealth fund credit lines my father established in Singapore. We don't defend against a short attack by hiding."

"What’s the play, Chairwoman?" Julian asked.
"We initiate a counter-squeeze," I smiled coldly. "If Jonathan Cross wants to short my father's empire, I will buy every single share he dumps until he chokes on his own poison."
