Chapter 36 - The Divided Loyalties

The private jet breached the cloud bank over the Mediterranean fourteen hours later, bathing the luxury cabin in the pale, golden hues of a southern European dawn.
Spread across the conference table between Ethan and me were the contents of the black ledger recovered from Geneva, cross-referenced with Arthur’s encrypted drive. The numbers were staggering: trillions of dollars laundered through sovereign bonds, private military contracts, and artificial commodities shortages. The Sterling family name was not just a participant; Evelyn Sterling was the Chief Arbiter of the entire cabal.
"Arthur kept one kill switch," Ethan said, sliding a heavy silver keycard toward me. It bore an intricate engraving of an ouroboros—a serpent eating its own tail. "He created a dormant algorithmic virus inside the Zurich Clearing House. If activated, it freezes forty percent of the Council's liquidity within sixty seconds."
"A financial EMP," I noted, studying the device.
"Exactly. But it requires dual-factor authentication. Arthur held one key. Your mother holds the other."
Suddenly, Marcus entered the cabin from the cockpit, his face grim. He placed a encrypted tablet on the table before us.
"We just intercepted an unencrypted maritime broadcast from *The Leviathan*," Marcus said. "It was transmitted on an open frequency directed toward incoming private airspace."
I tapped the screen. A crisp, high-definition video materialized.
Sitting behind a minimalist glass desk in what appeared to be the stateroom of an ultra-modern megayacht was an older woman. Her hair was spun silver, pinned back with austere perfection. Her cheekbones were high, sharp, and aristocratic—the exact twin of the reflection I looked at in the mirror every morning. Around her slender neck hung a familiar pendant: a raw, flawless canary diamond that matched the earrings Arthur had given me for my eighteenth birthday.
Evelyn Sterling.
"Good morning, Claire," she spoke directly into the camera, a faint, indulgent smile playing on her lips. "I know you're aboard Gulfstream N-704S. I know Ethan is sitting across from you, trying to convince you that your father was a martyr."
My heart hammered against my ribs, but I didn't blink.
"Your father was a coward who couldn't stomach the weight of true power," Evelyn continued smoothly. "He wanted to raise you in a gilded cage, ignorant of the empire that built your privilege. I gave you twenty years of peace, Claire. But now you have destroyed Julian Vance, proved your bloodline, and shown the Council that you possess the Sterling venom."
She paused, taking a delicate sip from a porcelain teacup.
"Come aboard, daughter. Take your seat beside me. Or refuse... and I will have Ethan’s family assets, Marcus’s hidden offshore trusts, and every ally who ever aided you wiped from the earth before sunrise."
May you like
The screen blinked black.
