Chapter 45 - The Blood Covenant

The Fifth Avenue vault was not located in a bank; it rested fifty feet beneath the historic Sterling brownstone where three generations of our family had lived and plotted. It was a subterranean fortress encased in three feet of reinforced titanium and cold-rolled steel.

The air smelled of chilled dust and aged cedar as the elevator doors pulled open into the granite foyer. Tristan was accompanied by four private mercenaries and two high-priced corporate attorneys. Ethan and I stood alone, flanked only by Marcus, our trusted head of security.

"The rules of the Sterling vault are simple," Tristan said, gesturing toward the monumental circular vault door that gleamed under the recessed halogen lights. "Two biometric scans. Two keys turned simultaneously within three seconds. If the signatures don't match, the fail-safe triggers, and the vault incinerates everything inside with concentrated thermite."

"Arthur was paranoid to the very end," Martin muttered from behind Tristan, sweating profusely in the chilled vault air.

"He wasn't paranoid, Martin. He knew he was surrounded by traitors," I replied without looking back.

I walked toward the console on the right side of the vault. Tristan walked toward the left. Between us lay a reinforced glass divider, reflecting our faces—brother and sister, bound by blood, divided by greed and betrayal.

"Last chance to negotiate, Claire," Tristan murmured through the intercom grille. "Surrender your forty percent stake in Sterling Global, and I will grant you a lifetime dividend of twenty million a year. You can retire to Paris with your husband. Live in peace."

"I don't surrender what is rightfully mine," I said calmly. "And I don't bargain with Evelyn's lapdogs."

Tristan’s jaw hardened, the charming facade instantly vanishing into cold fury. "Insert the key."

We reached out in unison. I produced the platinum key Arthur had given me on my eighteenth birthday—the key hidden inside the antique music box. Tristan produced an identical gold-alloy key, pulled from a chain around his neck.

We slid the keys into the dual cylinders.

"On my count," Tristan whispered. "Three. Two. One."

We turned the keys simultaneously. The console chimed softly.

*“Biometric confirmation required. Retinal scan initiating.”*

Twin crimson lasers swept across our eyes. The massive steel gears inside the door groaned with hydraulic force, echoing through the concrete chamber like thunder. Heavy deadbolts retracted one by one with deafening metallic clanks.

Then, the five-ton vault door swung open with agonizing slowness.

Inside, lit by faint golden spotlights, sat a single pedestal of black granite. Upon it rested a heavy iron-bound leather chest—the Sterling master ledger.

Tristan lunged forward first, his eyes alight with triumph. "It's mine!"

"Wait!" Ethan shouted, lunging to grab my arm as my eyes caught the faint, barely perceptible red optical sensor blinking beneath the granite pedestal.

Tristan’s fingers clamped around the brass handle of the chest.

A mechanical latch snapped beneath the pedestal. Instantly, heavy titanium blast shutters dropped down from the ceiling behind us with a terrifying crash, sealing Tristan, Ethan, and me inside the inner sanctum—and cutting off the mercenaries and Martin outside.
