Chapter 46 - Secrets of the Fifth Avenue Vault

The deafening boom of the blast shutters shook the reinforced floor beneath our boots. Dust rained down from the ceiling joints. Outside, Martin’s panicked screams and the frantic pounding of Tristan’s mercenaries were reduced to faint, muffled thuds through the three-inch solid armor plating.
"What did you do?!" Tristan snarled, whipping around, the ledger chest clutched tightly against his chest, his eyes manic and wild. "Did you rig this room, Claire?"
"I didn't rig anything," I replied, standing my ground as Ethan moved smoothly in front of me, his hand resting on his concealed sidearm. "You were too greedy to read the architectural protocols. Arthur never allowed anyone to take the ledger without verifying their true identity."
A mechanized projector hummed to life in the ceiling recess. A pale blue holographic beam shot down, casting a flickering light across the polished granite floor.
A recorded projection of Arthur Sterling materialized before us. He sat in his leather wingback chair, wearing the familiar tweed jacket he favored at home, a crystal glass of port resting on his knee. Though it was a recorded message made years ago, his sharp, penetrating gaze seemed to bore right into our souls.
*"If this projection has been triggered,"* Arthur’s deep, measured voice resonated through the vault's acoustic dampeners, *"then Evelyn has made her move, and the son I was forced to abandon has finally come to claim his inheritance."*
Tristan froze, his breathing ragged, staring at the apparition of the father he had never truly known. "Father..." he whispered.
*"Tristan,"* Arthur continued, his holographic image shifting slightly, *"if you are standing here, Evelyn Vance Montgomery has filled your head with lies of entitlement and revenge. She told you that I discarded you. She told you that I chose Claire over you out of spite."*
Arthur paused, taking a slow sip of port in the projection.
*"The truth is far darker. Evelyn was never your mother. Your mother was Victoria, the only woman I truly loved. Evelyn orchestrated Victoria’s death when you were an infant, staging it as an accidental drowning, and blackmailed me with your custody for twenty years. To keep you alive, Tristan, I had to let Evelyn place you with the Montgomery trustees in London under her hidden supervision. I spent decades weaving a financial cage to protect both you and Claire from Evelyn’s voracious appetite."*
Tristan’s face drained of every drop of color. "No... that's impossible. Evelyn raised me through proxy handlers. She gave me my education. She promised me the kingdom!"
*"The chest you hold does not contain the master shares,"* Arthur’s projection stated coldly. *"It contains the legal autopsy reports, the suppressed Swiss wire transfers, and the recorded confessions detailing Evelyn's murder of your mother, Victoria. If you choose Evelyn, you choose the woman who butchered your lineage. If you choose the truth, the key at the bottom of the chest opens the safe behind you—where the joint trust that unites you and Claire as equal partners resides."*

The holographic image faded into darkness, leaving only the cold hum of the ventilation shafts and Tristan’s shaking hands.
