Chapter 43 - The Phantom Heir

The silence inside the admiral’s cabin was deafening after the satellite call dissolved into static. The low hum of the French warship’s engines beneath our feet felt like a ticking countdown.
"Sister?" Ethan whispered, his brow furrowed as his eyes locked onto mine. "Claire, Arthur never mentioned having another child. Your mother never spoke of a son."
"Because he isn't my mother's son," I said, cold dread pooling in my gut as fragmented memories snapped into place like jagged shards of glass. "Arthur lived two lives before he built the Sterling dynasty. There were rumors twenty-five years ago—whispers of an affair in London with Lady Victoria Montgomery before Arthur returned to the States and married Evelyn. Arthur had a secret trust, one that vanished from the family ledgers right around the time I was born."
"And Evelyn knew," Ethan realized, his jaw clenching. "That was her insurance policy. If her grand syndicate on *The Leviathan* collapsed, she had a backup player already positioned on the board. A biological heir with an ironclad claim to the core lineage."
I grabbed my coat, adrenaline scorching the exhaustion out of my veins. "We don't have forty-eight hours. If he has physical access to the Fifth Avenue vault, he already controls the bearer bonds, the private offshore certificates, and the master override keys to Sterling Global's domestic holdings. Call the private jet. We leave for JFK the second we touch shore in Marseille."
Two hours later, as our Gulfstream G650 tore through the gray morning clouds above the Atlantic, Ethan handed me an encrypted tablet. Our forensic team in London had pulled up a single sealed dossier marked with the crest of the British high courts.
Tristan Montgomery-Sterling. Twenty-six years old. Educated at Oxford, trained in private equity at Mayfair, and an unacknowledged ghost in the Sterling bloodline. In the dossier’s photograph, his pale gray eyes and sharp, aristocratic jawline bore an uncanny, haunting resemblance to my late father. But the cruel curve of his smirk was pure Evelyn.
"He filed an emergency petition with the New York Surrogate’s Court while we were raiding the Mediterranean," Ethan reported, his voice dark. "He submitted a holographic will supposedly signed by Arthur two weeks before his death, naming Tristan the majority trustee of the family estate in the event of Evelyn's absence or forfeiture. And the judge granted an emergency injunction freezing your signatory authority until a formal hearing."
"He didn't just ambush us," I said, clutching the leather armrest until my knuckles turned white. "He orchestrated my absence so he could walk straight through the front doors of my empire. But he forgot one detail."
"What's that?" Ethan asked.

"Arthur taught me how to defend that vault," I whispered. "And blood alone has never been enough to hold the Sterling throne."
