Chapter 49 - A High-Stakes Betrayal

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members jumped from their seats, grabbing the paper trails that definitively linked Martin’s personal accounts to Evelyn’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.
"Lies! All forged!" Martin shrieked, backing toward the private executive balcony exit. "You have no legal right to overturn this! The probate court granted Tristan sole trusteeship!"
"And as sole trustee," Tristan announced, turning toward the company's chief legal counsel, "I hereby execute my irrevocable right under Section 14 of the Montgomery-Sterling covenant. I divide my proxy equally with my sister, Claire Sterling, and together we invoke the sovereign veto. This board meeting is adjourned. And Martin Sterling is terminated, effective immediately."
Martin realized he was finished. With the eyes of thirty horrified billionaire investors burning into him, he lunged toward his briefcase on the side table, frantically pulling out a sleek black detonator switch.
"Nobody moves!" Martin screamed, his eyes bloodshot, his sanity cracking under the pressure. "You think Evelyn didn't anticipate this?! She knew Tristan might turn soft! She knew you might survive! If I don't sign the transfer papers and upload the authorization codes to Cerberus within five minutes, the backup charge in the server farm on floor twenty will trigger! All your digital records, all your client ledgers, everything goes up in smoke!"
A collective gasp echoed across the room. Several board members dropped to the floor in panic.
"Martin, don't do this," Ethan said calmly, taking half a step forward, his hands open and visible. "You blow those servers, you spend the rest of your life in ADX Florence. Hand over the trigger."
"Back off, Ethan!" Martin snarled, backing toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that looked out over the Manhattan skyline. "Evelyn promised me fifty million in Panama! I'm not leaving here empty-handed!"
"You're not leaving here at all," I said calmly, stepping past Ethan. I pulled my phone from my pocket and tapped the screen once.
On the main presentation monitor behind Martin, a live video feed instantly replaced the Cerberus contract.
It showed the server farm on the 20th floor. Two bomb disposal technicians from the NYPD counter-terrorism unit were already wrapping the small military-grade C4 charge in a Kevlar blast blanket, while Marcus gave a thumbs-up to the camera.

"You're six minutes too late, Uncle Martin," I said softly. "Tristan warned us about Evelyn’s digital fail-safe the moment we cleared the vault. The bomb has been neutralized."
