Chapter 26 - The Diamond Exchange Heist

The rain poured down on 47th Street, reflecting the neon signs of the Diamond District in greasy puddles on the asphalt. It was 3:00 AM. The street was nominally asleep, but behind the reinforced steel shutters of the Manhattan Diamond Exchange, half a billion dollars in untraceable gems and bearer bonds slept behind computerized vaults.
Marcus pulled the Cadillac into an alleyway across from the Exchange's rear service entrance.
"The video Chloe sent was routed through an internal server located inside this building," Marcus reported, tapping on a rugged military laptop mounted on the dashboard. "Senator Vance doesn't trust commercial banks with the original paper deeds. The physical foundation of the Sterling Sovereign Trust is sitting in Sub-Vault 4B."
"And Ethan?" I asked.
"Thermal scans show three heat signatures in the subterranean storage level," Marcus replied. "One stationary—likely tied down. Two mobile guards. Chloe Davenport's personal phone registered on a local cell tower twenty minutes ago. She's down there right now, attempting to drill the vault before the Senator's morning gala."
"Why would Chloe want the deeds herself?" I asked, looking at Arthur. "She was Vance's mistress. She rode his coattails to every luxury party in Florida."
"Chloe Davenport is not a simple mistress," Arthur said darkly. "Her father was the chief accountant who helped Julian Vance siphon the first billion out of my European accounts twelve years ago. When her father died under suspicious circumstances, Julian took her in as a ward. She doesn't serve Julian out of loyalty; she serves him out of survival. And now, she wants the leverage to break free."
"I'm going down there," I said, unbuckling my seatbelt.
Arthur reached out, his hand firm on my shoulder. "Claire, Marcus can handle the tactical extraction. You don't need to risk yourself."
"No, Dad," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "For seven years, Chloe stood beside Ethan, whispering insults into my ear, pouring wine onto my clothes, reminding me every single day that I was nothing more than an unpaid maid in my own home. If Ethan's empire is burning tonight, I am going to strike the match myself."
Arthur looked at me for a long moment. Then, slowly, a nod of fierce respect crossed his features. He reached under his seat and pulled out a sleek, compact semi-automatic pistol, sliding it into my hand.
"Double-action. Safety is off. Shoot anyone who touches you," he said simply.
Ten minutes later, Marcus and I were moving through the shadowed service corridors of the Diamond Exchange. The building's digital surveillance had already been looped by our cyber team; to the outside world, the security monitors displayed tranquil, empty hallways.
We descended the concrete stairwell into Sub-Vault 4B. The smell of burning metal and industrial coolant filled the damp air.
As we reached the heavy reinforced door, a muffled scream echoed through the corridor.
"Where is the key, Ethan?!" Chloe's voice shrilled, sharp and hysterical. "Julian is announcing the transfer at nine in the morning! If I don't have the paper deeds to present to the regulatory board, he will have me executed just like he ordered for you!"
I stepped through the shattered doorway into the vault anteroom.
The scene was bathed in the harsh white light of portable work lamps. Ethan Vance sat strapped to an iron chair, his face bruised purple, his designer suit ruined. Chloe stood before him, a portable industrial thermal drill whirring in her hand, smoking near his face. Two private security contractors stood near the vault safe.
"He doesn't have the key, Chloe," I said smoothly, stepping out of the shadows.
Chloe froze. The drill clattered to the concrete floor.
Both contractors instantly reached for their holsters, but Marcus fired twice with suppressed precision. Two soft thumps echoed, and both guards dropped to the floor, immobilized before they could clear leather.
Ethan's bloodshot eyes went wide, wild with terror and confusion. "Claire?! Claire, you're... you're alive?!"
Chloe backed up against the reinforced vault door, her hands shaking, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at the gun in my hand. "Claire... you... how did you get in here? Arthur Sterling is dead!"
May you like
"My father is waiting in the car," I said, taking two deliberate steps forward, the click of my designer heels echoing like gunshots in the enclosed space. "And as for you, Chloe... you're standing in front of my safe."
