Chapter 27 - The Debt Collected

The silence in the concrete chamber was absolute, broken only by Ethan’s ragged, wheezing sobs.
"Claire... baby, please," Ethan whimpered, his voice trembling like a frightened child's. "I didn't want to hurt you! Julian made me do it! He told me if I didn't marry you and keep you sedated, he'd cut me off! He'd kill me! I kept you alive for seven years, Claire! You have to remember that! I protected you from him!"
I stopped two feet from his chair. Looking down at him, I felt no anger. I felt no heartbreak. The handsome, arrogant prince of Miami society who had tossed a glass of champagne in my face while hundreds of guests laughed was gone. In his place sat a spineless, pathetic parasite who had built his entire life on stolen glory.
"You protected me?" I asked, my voice calm, almost musical. "By locking me in a guest room while you paraded Chloe through our penthouse? By telling everyone in Florida that I was a deranged, charity case you took in out of pity?"
"I was acting!" Ethan pleaded, tears streaming down his swollen cheeks. "It was all an act to fool Julian! Claire, untie me! We have the deeds! We can take the money and run to South America! Just you and me, like we planned!"
A bitter laugh escaped Chloe's lips. She slid down against the vault door, clutching her chest, staring at Ethan with utter disgust. "You pathetic coward. Five minutes ago you were offering to give me the vault combination if I promised to let you run away to Monaco."
Chloe looked up at me, her face pale, the arrogance that had defined her in Miami completely shattered. "Shoot me, Claire. Get it over with. Julian is going to butcher all of us by dawn anyway."
"Nobody is getting shot," I replied, lowering my weapon and gesturing toward Marcus. "Untie Ethan."
Marcus frowned slightly. "Miss Claire?"
"Untie him," I repeated.
Marcus stepped forward with a tactical knife and severed the zip-ties binding Ethan's wrists and ankles. Ethan tumbled to the floor, gasping, rubbing his raw, bleeding skin. He looked up at me with a desperate, hopeful glimmer in his eyes.
"Claire... thank you... thank you—"
"Get on your feet," I ordered coldly.
Ethan scrambled up, swaying unsteadily.
I pointed to the biometric scanner on Sub-Vault 4B. "Open it."
"I... I can't," Ethan stammered, his eyes darting wildly. "It requires a dual-stage passkey. Julian has the master cipher, and the biometric lock only responds to—"
"To me," I interrupted.
I stepped past Chloe, who shrank away against the wall, and pressed my right thumb against the optical scanner.
*Biometric Match: Sterling, Claire. Access Level: Sovereign Prime.*
The mechanical locks disengaged with a series of heavy, metallic thuds. The massive steel door swung open on oiled hinges, revealing the interior of the vault. Inside sat four titanium lockboxes, untouched, bearing the golden seal of Arthur Sterling’s original trust.
Inside those boxes were the true physical certificates of ownership for thirty-four shipping lines, six private banks, and the mineral rights to seven million acres of resource-rich land across North America. The real collateral backing the Sterling empire.
"It was never your vault, Ethan," I said softly, looking inside. "You were just the guard dog who thought he owned the house."
Ethan swallowed hard, his face completely devoid of color. "What... what are you going to do with us?"
I turned back to look at the two of them. Ethan, battered and shivering; Chloe, broken and stripped of her luxury facade.
"Marcus," I said smoothly. "Call the private medical team. Clean Ethan up. Put him in a clean tuxedo. Give Chloe a dress from the Plaza boutique."
Chloe blinked, stunned. "A... a dress?"

"Senator Vance is hosting a celebration in five hours," I smiled, a cold, predatory smile that made Ethan physically flinch. "He expects to announce the complete extinction of the Sterling family to the world's most powerful investors. It would be rude of us to let him give that speech without his guest of honor."
