Chapter 31 - The Final Reckoning

The aftermath in the Grand Ballroom was swift and ruthless. Within an hour, the room was cleared of guests and press, leaving only Arthur, Marcus, our security detail, and the two broken figures sitting on the velvet chairs: Ethan Vance and Chloe Davenport.
Ethan sat hunched over, his hands clasped between his knees, staring at the polished marble floor. He looked up as my shadow fell over him.
"Claire..." Ethan croaked, his voice thick with tears. "I gave him up. You heard me. I confessed on live television. I saved the empire for you. That has to count for something... please."
I looked at him, feeling an overwhelming sense of closure. The phantom of the arrogant man who had spent seven years reminding me that I was an unloved, worthless orphan had completely vanished.
"You didn't save anything, Ethan," I said calmly. "You saved your own skin because you knew your father was going to discard you like garbage. Just like you discarded me in Miami."
"I was stupid!" Ethan begged, dropping to his knees on the marble floor, crawling forward until his forehead touched the hem of my emerald gown. "I was blind, Claire! I love you! I've always loved you! We can get married again—for real this time! I'll be your dog! I'll do whatever you want! Just don't let them send me to federal prison! Please!"
Chloe looked at him with sheer revulsion, turning her face away in disgust. "Get up, Ethan. Have a shred of dignity."
"Shut up, Chloe!" Ethan shrieked, tears and snot running down his face. "This is your fault! You pushed me to take her to Miami! You told me to humiliate her at the gala so she'd sign the divorce papers!"
"Enough," I said softly.
Ethan froze, looking up at me with wide, pleading eyes.
"Marcus," I said without looking back.
"Yes, Miss Sterling?"
"Ethan Vance is an accessory to corporate espionage, forgery, and domestic abuse," I stated coldly. "Hand him over to the federal prosecutors along with every recording we have from the Miami penthouse. Ensure he receives no bail, no private counsel from the Vance trust, and no protective custody."
Ethan let out a wail of pure despair as two Sterling guards seized him by the arms, dragging him backward across the floor. "Claire! No! Claire, please! I'm your husband! Claireeeee!"
His screams faded down the grand corridor until the heavy oak doors shut behind him, sealing his fate behind bars for the rest of his miserable life.
Then, I turned to Chloe.
Chloe sat upright, her hands folded in her lap, her face pale but composed. She didn't beg. She knew me too well to think tears would save her.
"What about me, Claire?" Chloe asked quietly. "Federal prison alongside Ethan?"
"Your father was killed by Julian Vance," I said. "You were trapped in his web just like Ethan was, but you chose cruelty when you could have chosen mercy. Every insult, every glass of wine you poured on me, every public humiliation in Miami—those were your choices, Chloe."
Chloe swallowed hard, a flicker of genuine regret passing through her dark eyes. "I know."
"I am not sending you to prison," I said.
Chloe blinked, stunned. "You're... letting me go?"
"No," I replied, my voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "I have seized your family's trust. I have seized your offshore accounts, your properties in Miami, your jewelry, and your cars. You leave this room with the clothes on your back and one thousand dollars in cash. You will work an ordinary job, pay ordinary rent, and ride the subway with the people you spent your entire life looking down upon. If you ever set foot within a hundred miles of me or my father, Marcus will ensure you vanish into the North Sea."
Chloe stared at me for a long time, the weight of a lifetime of poverty crashing down upon her shoulders. Slowly, she stood up, bowed her head in defeat, and whispered, "Thank you, Claire."
She turned and walked out of the ballroom, alone, stripped of every ounce of wealth and status she had ever owned.
Arthur walked up behind me, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. "It is finished, my child. The house of Vance has fallen."
I took a deep breath, feeling the golden weight of the signet ring on my finger. "Yes, Dad. It's finished."
