Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Whitehall

The crimson wax cracked under my thumb like dry bone. Inside the heavy parchment lay two items: a heavy brass key bearing an intricate serial number, and a single sheet of watermarked paper covered in my father’s unmistakable, sloping hand.
My hands trembled violently as I read:
*My dearest Claire,*
*If you are reading this, Jonathan Cross has fallen, and Ethan has proven to be the wretched coward I always anticipated. You have survived the wolves, my brave girl. But you must understand the truth: I did not die six years ago in that Mediterranean plane crash. I could not.*
*The Syndicate’s roots ran deeper than Sterling Global. Had I stayed, they would have butchered you to force my hand. My death was the only shield thick enough to keep you alive while you grew into the sovereign you were born to be. Cross was merely an enforcer—a dog on a chain. The hand holding the leash belongs to Lord Alistair Vance, operating out of Mayfair.*
*Take the key. Vault 409, Banque Privée de Genève. Inside is the ledger that will bring Vance to his knees. Trust no one outside of Maxwell. And Claire... look out your penthouse window.*
*With all my love,*
*Arthur Sterling.*
"Claire?" Maxwell’s voice was tense, his hand instinctively resting against the grip of his concealed firearm. "What does it say?"
I couldn't speak. My throat felt closed, paralyzed by shock and surging adrenaline. I turned slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the glittering Miami shoreline.
Down on the private access pier below our high-rise tower, a black town car was idling. Standing beside the open rear door was a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal trench coat. He held a pair of brass binoculars raised toward our terrace.
As if sensing my gaze, he lowered the glasses. Even from seventy stories up, the silhouette was burned into my soul.
He raised a gloved hand to his temple, offered a solemn, military salute, and stepped into the car. The sedan sped away into the morning traffic.
"Claire!" Julian stepped forward, seeing the color drain from my face. "What did you see?"
"My father," I whispered, clutching the letter against my chest until the paper crumpled. "He didn't die. He's alive."
Maxwell went rigid, his jaw clenching. "Arthur... faked his demise?"
May you like
"He had to," I said, cold fury rapidly replacing my shock. "Jonathan Cross wasn't the head of the snake. Lord Alistair Vance is. And my father just handed me the weapon to execute him."
