Chapter 16 - Betrayal in the Boardroom

The Sterling International headquarters in Canary Wharf was a fortress of glass and steel, standing tall over the River Thames.

At ten o’clock the following morning, the thirty-fourth floor boardroom was packed with high-ranking European aristocrats, institutional investors, and international executives. At the head of the mahogany table sat Lady Victoria Ashford, radiant in bespoke ivory silk, her diamonds catching the morning light.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Victoria’s cultivated British accent echoed smoothly through the room. "In light of the tragic... irregularities involving young Ethan Sterling and Jonathan Cross in Miami, Claire Sterling is understandably incapacitated by grief and trauma. As senior trustee of the Ashford-Sterling pact, I move to invoke emergency clause 12-B, transferring full executive authority of Sterling Global to my consortium."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the compromised board members. Several hands began to rise.

"Seconded," called out an ally of Vance.

"Before you cast that vote, Victoria," a voice rang out clear as tempered steel, "you might want to check the shareholder registry."

The heavy double doors swung open.

I stepped into the room, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo suit, my red-soled heels clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble. Behind me walked Julian, flanked by four armed operatives from the British Serious Fraud Office.

Victoria froze, the tea cup rattling against her porcelain saucer. The color drained from her sculpted face, though she quickly recovered with a cold, venomous smile.

"Claire, darling," Victoria purred, standing up. "You look exhausted. Security, please escort Mrs. Sterling to the medical suite. She is unwell."

"Sit down, Victoria," I said, walking to the foot of the table. "You don't command anyone in this building. Not anymore."

With a nod from Julian, the main digital display on the wall blinked to life. Instead of the Ashford takeover presentation, it displayed the forensic banking routes from Banque Privée de Genève, flashing Victoria Ashford’s private offshore accounts alongside payments made to the flight technicians who sabotaged Arthur Sterling’s aircraft six years ago.

The room erupted into gasps and furious shouts. Board members scrambled to their feet.

Victoria’s composure shattered. Her refined mask stripped away, revealing raw, snarling malice. "You insolent little brat! You think some fabricated bank statements can touch me? Lord Vance owns the judiciary! You have nothing!"

"I don't need the judiciary to break your spine, Victoria," I replied softly, placing my father’s ledger squarely in the center of the table. "I hold seventy-two percent of voting shares, and as of three minutes ago, the Serious Fraud Office froze every asset linked to the Ashford Trust."

Two federal agents stepped forward, unhooking silver handcuffs. "Lady Victoria Ashford, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, high-seas money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder."

As the cuffs clicked around her wrists, Victoria locked her venomous eyes onto mine.

May you like

"You think you’ve won, Claire?" she hissed, leaning close as she was dragged toward the door. "Vance isn't waiting for the courts. He knows your father is in England. And before the sun sets, both of you will be buried in the same grave."
