Chapter 65 - The Treason of Table One

"David, no! You can't take on an entire mercenary unit alone!" I screamed, grabbing his tactical vest, trying to pull him past the sliding hydraulic iron door.

"I won't be alone," David replied, pointing toward the railway end of the tunnel.

Through the darkness of the old freight tunnel, the low, mechanical rumble of a locomotive engine echoed across the tracks. Blinding halogen work lights cut through the subterranean mist. Standing on the forward platform of an armored Vance Logistics switch engine were six men dressed in high-visibility jackets and carrying tactical rifles—the veteran freight crews of Track Two, led by Arthur's oldest dispatch foreman, Frank Reynolds.

"You think Nashville forgot who built these lines?" Frank’s voice boomed over the engine's external loudspeaker. "Hold the line, Vance!"

A hail of suppressing fire erupted from the switch engine, blanketing the staircase in lead and driving the Sterling mercenaries back into the upper stairwell. David used the cover to slide through the heavy hydraulic gate, slamming the manual override lever. The four-inch slab of tempered steel groaned shut, locking the mercenaries out of the freight tunnels permanently.

Lord William slumped against the wall, defeated and exhausted, staring at the blue-collar rail workers who had completely neutralized his elite corporate strike force.

"How?" William muttered in disbelief. "How could a ragtag collection of provincial freight mechanics outmaneuver the finest private intelligence network in Europe?"

"Because loyalty isn't bought on an exchange, William," David said, wiping blood from a shallow cut on his brow. "You bought men with money and fear. My father gave them dignity and brotherhood. That's why Table One failed at my wedding, that's why Croft fell in the train yard, and that's why you're walking out of here in handcuffs."

Suddenly, the secondary terminal screen on Frank's engine console chimed. An urgent notification appeared, originating from the downtown federal courthouse.

"Sarah," Frank called out, his weathered face tight with tension. "We've got a live feed coming in from Suite 400. Miller just raided the private offices of the Chancery Court."

I opened the document, and my breath caught in my throat. The legal treason ran deeper than we ever imagined. The original wedding contract between David and Eleanor wasn't just a cover for corporate infiltration—it contained an active signature from the highest municipal office in Tennessee.
