Chapter 27 - The Sanctuary on Belle Meade

By dawn, the storm had finally washed the city clean.

We were escorted to a secure, heavily guarded safehouse in the rolling hills of Belle Meade—a private estate owned by an old friend of my father who had never bowed to the corrupt cartel that swallowed the family shipping line.

Leo was finally fast asleep in an upstairs bedroom, curled under a thick down comforter, exhausted by the night’s trauma but completely unharmed. A private physician had checked him over and assured me he would recover with time, love, and safety.

Downstairs in the sunlit study, David and I sat across from Agent Reynolds, steaming mugs of black coffee untouched on the mahogany table between us.

Spread across the table were the contents of the steel box. Decoded ledgers, real estate deeds, and the crown jewel: my father’s true, unadulterated last will and testament, stamped by the state supreme court before his sudden death three years ago.

"This changes everything, Sarah," Reynolds said, adjusting his glasses as he examined the final document. "Your brother didn't just embezzle funds; he fabricated the entire inheritance dispute. He had no legal claim to the 4th Avenue terminal, nor the shipping routes, nor the family trust. Every single dollar he pledged to his foreign backers at that wedding gala was based on fraud."

"And the wedding itself?" I asked quietly.

"A massive money-laundering front," Reynolds replied, shaking his head in disbelief. "The luxury gifts, the offshore trusts registered in his bride’s family name, the VIP guests at Table One... it was all designed to shift two hundred million dollars into untraceable private accounts before our investigation could close in."

David looked at me, a soft, rare smile touching his rugged face. "You did it, Sarah. You held the line."

"We did it," I corrected him, placing my hand over his calloused fingers. "We did it together."

Yet, even as relief washed over me, a lingering unease twisted in my gut. My brother was reckless, greedy, and arrogant, but he wasn't a mastermind. He didn't have the brains to design an operation this sophisticated.
