Chapter 21 - The Iron Cage of 4th Avenue

The silence that followed the voice was suffocating, punctuated only by the distant, rhythmic wail of the facility’s emergency sirens above. In the pitch-black subterranean vault, my breath caught in my throat. Every maternal instinct I possessed screamed at me to abandon the steel box, abandon the evidence, and tear through concrete and steel with my bare hands to reach Leo.

"Don't move, Sarah," David whispered, his voice barely a breath against my ear. His fingers were steady, but the tension radiating from his body was palpable.

Above us, on the iron grate of the emergency spiral stairs, the heavy combat boots shifted. A tactical flashlight clicked on, slicing through the darkness with a blinding beam of white LED light. The intruder was silhouetted against the railing, his weapon raised, the barrel gleaming with sinister purpose.

"Ten seconds, Sarah," the man called down, his tone dripping with patronizing calm. "You throw the lockbox up, kick it to the center platform, and maybe—just maybe—I tell my men upstairs not to put a bullet through that pretty boy’s head before they throw him in the trunk."

"He's just a child!" I cried out, my voice raw, deliberately leaning into the illusion of helplessness while David silently slid into the deep shadow behind the hydraulic elevator pillar. "Take whatever you want! Just leave Leo out of this!"

"You should have thought about your boy before you decided to ruin your brother's wedding, before you decided to audit the family dynasty," the man sneered, descending two more steps. "Your father built an empire, Sarah, but you tore it apart for your little crusade."

He took another step down, his flashlight sweeping across the vault floor, looking for my silhouette.

*Crack.*

The deafening report of David’s handgun reverberated through the enclosed concrete chamber like thunder. The tactical light shattered in an explosion of sparks. A guttural scream ripped from the intruder’s throat as his weapon clattered down the metal stairs, hitting the grated floor with a sharp clang.

"Move!" David roared, grabbing my arm and pulling me upward.

We didn't wait for the wounded operative to recover. David surged up the spiral staircase like a predator, disarming the man with a brutal, precise strike to the temple before he could draw his sidearm. The operative crumpled onto the landing.

David snatched the dropped assault rifle and thrust the steel lockbox into my hands. "Hold this tight. The stairs lead to the secondary utility corridor behind the rotunda. If Marcus is holding the study, we have three minutes before they breach his line."

"I'm not leaving without my son, David," I whispered fiercely, clutching the heavy steel box to my chest like a shield.

May you like

"Neither am I," he promised, his eyes burning in the dim emergency light. "Let's go take back your boy."
