Chapter 49 - The Sovereign Checkmate

Gunfire erupted from the high girders of the Shelby Street Bridge. The federal marshals took cover behind their cruisers as armor-piercing rounds shattered windshields and ricocheted off concrete pillars. Eleanor had anticipated a trap and set an even deadlier counter-ambush.

"They're pinned down!" Miller shouted through the radio, firing back toward the high bridge supports. "Sarah, David, stay down!"

"If we stay down, she boards that boat and detonates the pier!" David yelled back over the deafening cacophony of automatic fire.

David broke cover, sprinting along the edge of the shipping containers, drawing the fire of the catwalk snipers toward himself with superhuman bravery. Tracers sparked off the corrugated steel inches from his boots as he fired three precise rounds upward, eliminating the primary sniper perched on the crane gantry.

Seizing the opening David created, I charged across the open pier straight toward the vessel's mooring line. Eleanor saw me. Her eyes widened in pure, aristocratic fury as she pulled a small silver automatic pistol from her trench coat, aiming directly at my chest.

"You insolent, provincial peasant!" Eleanor screamed over the howling storm. "Your family was born to serve mine!"

Before she could squeeze the trigger, Julian lunged from the shadows of the loading crane, tackling Eleanor’s armed bodyguard into the icy river below. Eleanor swung her gun toward Julian, her hatred overcoming her composure.

That second of hesitation was all I needed.

I closed the distance in three violent strides, kicking the pistol from her grasp. The silver weapon spun through the air and vanished into the churning black waters of the Cumberland. Eleanor stumbled backward against the railing of the gangway, clutching her bruised wrist, her aristocratic composure completely shattered.

"It’s over, Eleanor," I said, breathing hard, holding my weapon steady between her eyes. "The state grid is secure. Your servers are destroyed. The *Pale Horse* file has already been transmitted to every federal prosecutor in the country."

Eleanor glared at me, her chest heaving, rain plastering her silver hair to her pale, aristocratic face. For the first time, she looked fragile, mortal, and thoroughly defeated.

Behind us, sirens flooded the riverbank. Dozens of federal tactical units swarmed the docks, securing the mercenaries and disarming the remaining shooters. The Vance family had held the line. We had survived the long night.
