Chapter 28 - The Midnight Press

By noon, the media firestorm erupted across the nation.
Every major news network and financial publication led with the same headline: *DYNASTY COLLAPSE: BILLION-DOLLAR WEDDING CONSPIRACY EXPOSED IN NASHVILLE.*
I watched the television screen in the safehouse living room as footage from the wedding played in split-screen with the morning’s arrests. Journalists stood outside the Chancery Court, reporting on the massive federal raids that had taken place across three states before sunrise.
Footage rolled of my brother’s luxury penthouse being swarmed by federal agents. My brother, Arthur, was shown being escorted down the steps in handcuffs, a jacket thrown over his head to hide his face from the flashing cameras. His bride, radiant and haughty just forty-eight hours ago at the altar, was seen crying hysterically as luxury vehicles and designer assets were tagged and seized by federal marshals.
"The Cumberland Freight Empire," the anchor announced, "has officially been placed into emergency receivership, with lawful control temporarily returned to Sarah Sterling, the sole legitimate heir designated under the newly discovered original testament of the late patriarch."
Public support was overwhelmingly on our side. The viral footage of the wedding confrontation, paired with the horrifying news that mercenaries had attempted to abduct my son, turned the public sentiment into an unstoppable tidal wave of outrage against Arthur and his corrupt cronies.
"Table One has fallen," Frank chuckled, switching off the TV and setting down a plate of fresh sandwiches. "The board voted unanimously ten minutes ago. Arthur’s share is voided. You’re back in command, Sarah."
I took a deep breath, looking out the panoramic window at the bright morning sun reflecting off the Tennessee hills. For months, I had lived in terror, hiding in the shadows, fighting for scraps while my own family treated my son and me like ghosts who had no right to exist.
Now, justice was finally being served. We had our name back. We had our home back.
Leo came bounding down the stairs in an oversized sweater, rubbing his eyes and smiling shyly. "Mom? Are we going to see our real home today?"
May you like
"Yes, sweetheart," I said, pulling him into my lap and holding him tight. "We’re going home today."
