Chapter 59 - The Threshold of the Vance Manor

The iron gates of the Belle Meade manor were wide open, their electronic lock systems fried by an electromagnetic pulse device. Two black armored SUVs with diplomatic flags sat idling silently on the gravel driveway, their headlights cutting through the weeping willows that our father had planted forty years ago.

David killed the truck’s engine fifty yards out. We moved through the darkness of the front lawn like ghosts, handguns drawn, every nerve ending screaming.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the house were unlatched. Inside, the grand foyer was dead quiet, illuminated only by the warm glow of the fireplace coming from the study down the hall.

We slipped through the doorway of the study, weapons raised.

Our mother, Helen Vance, was seated on the velvet settee. Her hands were folded neatly in her lap, her face pale but remarkably composed. Standing beside the mantelpiece was Lord William Sterling, holding an ancient silver pocket watch in his hand, his eyes scanning the leather-bound books that lined our father's shelves.

"Lower your weapons, children," our mother said, her voice steady, though her eyes betrayed a lifetime of buried sorrow. "Lord William has come for what was promised."

"Mom, get behind us," David commanded, keeping his sight picture locked onto the old man’s chest. "He's an international criminal. Miller is ten minutes behind us."

"Miller cannot enter this room, David," Lord William said, turning around slowly. He didn't have a weapon drawn. He looked at David not with hatred, but with a horrifying, possessive warmth. "Because if he enters, the scandal will destroy the Vance name far more completely than any bankruptcy."

Lord William tossed a yellowed document onto the coffee table between us.

I kept my gun aimed at his head as I stepped forward and looked down. It was an official birth certificate from the General Register Office for Scotland, dated November 14, 1989.

The mother was listed as *Lady Margaret Sterling*, Lord William's younger sister who died in a mysterious boating accident in 1991.

The father was listed as *Arthur Vance*.
