Chapter 12 - The Uninvited Guest at Belle Meade

The Nashville society grapevine moved faster than interstate freight, and within forty-eight hours, the city's old money knew that the daughter who had been ostracized had returned as the undisputed landlord of the family fortune.

On Thursday evening, the annual Cumberland Logistics Benefactors Gala was held at the Belle Meade historic club. I arrived on David’s arm, wearing an obsidian-black backless silk gown that swept the marble floors, my neck adorned with a single choker of raw emeralds. Every eye in the ballroom turned toward us. The whispered insults that had once followed me through these halls were replaced by reverent hushes and nervous nods from board members who had previously signed off on Julian’s reckless spending.

"They're afraid of you, Sarah," David whispered against my ear, a slow, proud smirk playing on his lips.

"They should be," I murmured. "Fear is the only currency they respect."

The music came to a sudden halt near the double terrace doors. Gasps rippled through the gathering as Victoria, my brother’s new bride, stepped into the light. Her designer gown was wrinkled at the hem, her blonde hair disheveled, and her face pale with frantic desperation. Behind her stood Julian, looking gaunt in a rented tuxedo that hung loosely on his frame.

"Sarah!" Victoria’s voice cut through the quartet’s melody, shrill and trembling with venom. "You think you’ve won? You parade around like a queen while Julian and I are locked out of the penthouse? You humiliated us in front of the entire state!"

The guests froze. Julian tried to grab her wrist to pull her back, his face burning with humiliation, but Victoria yanked herself free.

I didn't flinch. I took two deliberate, measured steps forward, the emerald at my throat catching the crystal chandelier. "Victoria, you stood in a five-thousand-dollar wedding gown and told my son he belonged in the servants' alley because his mother worked for her bread. You didn't lose your house because of me. You lost it because you spent money you never earned to buy respect you never deserved."

"We will take it back, Sarah!" Victoria hissed, her voice cracking as security guards moved in smoothly to flank her. "Julian’s father left a sealed codicil! You haven't seen the last of us!"

As the guards escorted them into the night, the ballroom burst into murmurs. But behind Victoria’s hysteria, I caught the cold, calculating look in Julian’s eyes—a look that told me her outburst was merely a distraction.
