Chapter 60 - The Sovereign Horizon Unbroken

The world spun on its axis. My hands shook so violently the gun nearly slipped from my grip. I stared from the document to David, whose face had gone completely, utterly hollow.
"No," David whispered, his voice cracking into raw agony. "No. That's a lie. Mom... tell me this is another one of their damn forgeries!"
Helen looked up, tears finally breaking past her composure and tracking down her weathered cheeks. "Arthur was young, David. Before he came back to Nashville to marry me, he loved Margaret. When Margaret died, Lord William threatened to bury the Vance freight lines under British maritime debt unless Arthur took you and raised you as his legitimate heir, keeping you safe from the Sterling family vultures. Eleanor wasn't sent here to marry a rival, David... Eleanor was sent here to bring the Sterling bloodline's true heir back into the family trust."
Lord William took a slow, deliberate step toward David.
"You are not the defender of Vance Logistics, my boy," Lord William said softly, extending a hand adorned with the Sterling signet ring. "You are the primary inheritor of the entire Sterling maritime empire. Eleanor was a traitor who tried to steal your birthright. Croft was an arrogant fool who thought he could strong-arm you. I didn't come to Nashville to destroy you, David. I came to crown you."
David lowered his gun, his chest heaving as the foundations of his entire life shattered into ash. The brother I had fought for, bled for, and defied an international cartel to protect... was the blood-born sovereign of the very empire that had tried to consume us.
"And Sarah?" David choked out, his eyes turning to me, filled with a terrifying mix of love and panic. "What happens to Sarah?"
Lord William’s smile vanished, replaced by an ancient, merciless coldness.
"Sarah has the drive," Lord William said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "And that drive contains the evidence that could send every director of my board to the Hague. She signs over the drive and renounces all claim to the Vance company, or my convoy outside ensures this house burns to the ground before Miller's sirens reach the gate."

Outside, through the shattered silence of the midnight estate, the low, synchronized clicking of twenty rifle bolts echoed from the perimeter of the lawn. The house was completely surrounded.
David looked at the gun in his hand, then at the birth certificate, and finally locked his gaze with mine—a silent, desperate choice hanging between blood, loyalty, and an empire built on fire.
