Chapter 11 - The Shadow on the Bill of Lading

The peace on the Cumberland terrace was sweet, but in the logistics empire I had wrenched back from my family’s greedy fingers, silence rarely lasted long. By Monday morning, the scent of fresh river mist was replaced by the familiar, grounding aroma of black coffee and diesel exhaust humming from the lower bays of the 4th Avenue Terminal.
I stood behind the mahogany desk of the executive suite, reviewing the quarterly manifests. Beside me, David leaned over the digital terminal, his broad shoulders casting a reassuring shadow over the glass display. Leo, my nine-year-old son, sat on the leather sofa near the bay window, carefully sketching a blueprint of a freight engine with the colored pencils David had bought him.
"Look at this entry on Bay 14, Sarah," David murmured, tapping a calloused finger against the monitor. "A fleet of six refrigerated reefers scheduled for midnight clearance. Consignee listed as an offshore LLC called *Crestview Holdings*."
I narrowed my eyes. "Crestview Holdings was the shell company Julian used to hide the venue down payment for his lavish wedding. The very wedding where he and Victoria tried to seat me at the clearance table next to the kitchen doors."
"The title was supposed to be liquidated under the Chancery Court's receivership," David said, his jaw tightening. "Someone filed an emergency injunction at five o'clock on Friday afternoon to delay the transfer. Julian hasn't given up. He’s trying to move collateral out of the county before the sheriff executes the lien."

A cold, familiar calm settled over my spine. Julian thought that because the judge had banged the gavel, our battle would remain polite and confined to courtrooms. He forgot that I had spent twelve years working dispatch while he squandered our father’s credit lines at country clubs.
"Call Frank in yard security," I commanded quietly, slipping on my tailored wool blazer. "Tell him no trailer leaves Bay 14 without my personal biometric stamp. If Julian thinks he can smuggle our family's stolen legacy out under the cover of darkness, I’m going to make sure he drives straight into a brick wall."
