Chapter 62 - The Sovereign Deadlock

A flash of genuine fury rippled across Lord William’s aristocratic features. For the first time since he crossed the threshold of the manor, the Patriarch looked uncertain. He glanced at the secure communications radio clipped to his lapel, but static hissed through the frequency—a violent, scrambling feedback generated by the manor’s subterranean server room.

"You bluff," Lord William whispered, though his hand drifted toward the inside of his tailored coat. "The data on that drive is secured by Royal Admiralty encryption. No civilian terminal in Tennessee can decompile those registries in under a week."

"It wasn't decompiled by a civilian terminal," David countered, his weapon rising in a smooth, unshakeable arc until the sights aligned perfectly with Lord William’s chest. "Our father spent thirty years archiving every clandestine maritime contract your syndicate pushed through the Gulf ports. He kept the decryption master keys stored offline on the rail yard's mainframe. Sarah doesn't need to crack your cipher, William. She already has the index."

Outside the reinforced shutters, the sound of sporadic rifle fire intensified, accompanied by the distinct thud of tactical flashbangs detonating on the front lawn. The Sterling strike team had begun their assault, attempting to breach the fortified perimeter before federal intervention could close the net around Belle Meade.

"Call them off," David demanded, his voice resonating through the fortified room. "Tell your hounds to drop their weapons, or the Sterling bloodline ends right here in this room with you."

Lord William let out a dry, humorless chuckle, though a bead of cold sweat formed along his silver hairline. "You won't shoot me, David. Arthur Vance drilled morality into your spine. You think like an honorable merchant, not a conqueror. You shoot me, and you sentence yourself to an international fugitive warrant."

"You forgot one detail, William," David replied, a dark, fearless grin breaking across his bruised face. "You just spent ten minutes convincing me I'm your primary legal heir. Under the Sterling Trust's own sovereign bylaws, if the Chairman commits treason against the charter, the primary successor possesses absolute field authority."

I stepped behind the main terminal, plugging the drive into the command terminal Arthur had hidden inside the oak desk decades ago. The screen flickered to life, bathing the study in a cool blue hue. Lines of glowing green code rushed past, decoding the Sterling maritime ledgers at blinding speed. The entire architecture of Lord William’s offshore shadow fleet was unfurling before our eyes.

"Sarah," David said without taking his eyes off the Patriarch. "Send the first tranche to the Federal Maritime Commission. Let them see what Lord William has been transporting beneath the Cumberland’s waters."
