Chapter 39 - The False Dawn

Victoria Mercer walked into the ruined nursery, her eyes sweeping over the carnage, over the smoking thermite, over Davies bleeding on the rug, and finally resting on my baby.

"She has the Mercer brow," the matriarch murmured softly, stopping three feet from where Alexander and I knelt on the floor. "And the strength of her mother. A true sovereign."

Elena stepped in behind her, holding a secure satellite terminal that had just intercepted an urgent flash transmission from the international banking hub in Bern.

"Madame," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with genuine dread. "The syndicate wasn't wiped out on the roof. The extraction team we engaged here... they were only a diversion."

Alexander stood up slowly, positioning his body directly between his mother and our child. "What are you talking about?"

Elena turned the screen toward us.

"The Aurelius Syndicate never planned to physically transport Victoria to Switzerland," Elena said, her eyes wide with shock. "They didn't need her body. They hacked the Mount Sinai biological archive where Victoria's newborn umbilical blood was preserved after Eleanor's delivery."

My blood ran colder than the Arctic ice.

"The cord blood," I whispered, the horror of modern corporate piracy hitting me like a freight train. "They stole her stem cell sequencing."

"With that genetic data," Victoria Mercer said, her face tightening into an expression of ferocious anger, "they are initiating a Sovereign Receivership in the International Court of Justice in The Hague at this very moment. They are claiming that because Alexander and Eleanor are currently under active federal investigation following Carter Vance's death and the Broad Street vault breach, the child's genetic trust must be placed into international receivership under their custody."

"Which gives them full legal control over forty billion dollars of energy and infrastructure assets," Marcus added, his face grim. "And the court hearing convenes in exactly twelve hours in the Netherlands."

"They set us up," Alexander said, his jaw clenching until his teeth nearly cracked. "They lured us to the Broad Street vault to frame us for federal treason, creating the exact legal justification needed to strip Victoria of her inheritance and us of our parental rights."

"And if they win that hearing," I said, rising to my feet with my baby clutched tightly against my heart, "Interpol will issue an international red notice. They will take Victoria by force with the full backing of international law."

Victoria Mercer leaned heavily on her falcon cane, her cerulean eyes flashing with the cold brilliance of a woman who had fought in the shadow wars for thirty years.

"There is only one way to stop an International Sovereign Receivership," the matriarch declared.

"How?" Alexander asked.

"The Head of the Dynasty must appear in person before the high judges in The Hague and enact the Sovereign Bloodline Veto," Victoria Mercer said. "A veto that can only be spoken by the living founder of the trust."

"My father is dead," Alexander said harshly. "And the court believes you died thirty years ago."

Victoria Mercer smiled—a cold, terrifying, and utterly triumphant smile.

"Then it is time for the world to see the dead walk the earth," she whispered. "My private supersonic jet is waiting at JFK. We fly to Europe within the hour. But Eleanor... you and the child cannot travel with us."
