Chapter 18 - The Bedrock Archive

Alexander opened a sleek carbon-fiber briefcase, withdrew a single piece of aged parchment encased in preservation glass, and laid it flat in front of Sterling Brooks.
"Arthur Mercer was many things, Sterling," Alexander said, his baritone booming across the quiet boardroom. "He was ruthless, he was calculating, and he was fiercely protective of his daughter. But he was never foolish enough to leave a sovereign default clause open to a man like your father."
Brooks leaned over, squinting at the document. "This is... a secondary codicil."
"It’s an anti-dilution reciprocal covenant executed in Zurich in 1996," I explained, leaning back in my leather chair, clasping my hands over my lap. "Signed by your father, William Brooks, and Arthur Mercer. It states that if *any* heir of William Brooks attempts to enforce a call-option based on lineage disputes against Arthur’s descendants, the entire Brooks estate automatically assumes all environmental liabilities of the South American mining concessions."
Brooks’ face went completely white. "What?"
"Do you know how much the environmental remediation costs are for those mines today, Sterling?" Julian chimed in, turning his laptop screen toward the board. "The International Court of Justice assessed the toxic runoff penalties last month at three point four billion dollars."
The entire boardroom fell dead silent.
"You triggered the option thirty minutes ago," I said, my voice steady, merciless, and calm. "Which means, by operation of law, Brooks Capital just legally assumed three point four billion dollars in immediate, uninsurable debt. The New York Stock Exchange was notified fifteen minutes ago. How do you think your stock is trading right now?"
Brooks whipped his phone out of his pocket. His hands shook violently as he stared at the screen.
*Brooks Capital Inc. — DOWN 74% IN PRE-MARKET TRADING.*
Margin calls were already flooding his servers. His lenders were pulling liquidity. His empire was disintegrating in real-time, right before his eyes.
"No... no, this is impossible!" Brooks roared, slamming his fist onto the table, sending papers flying. "This document is fraudulent! My lawyers vetted everything!"
"Your lawyers vetted what Elena Moreau gave them," Alexander countered, stepping forward, towering over Brooks. "And Elena was working with Carter Vance’s forged ledgers. You bought a lie, Sterling. And you bet your entire family's fortune on it."
"Security," I commanded softly.

Four armed Mercer security guards entered the boardroom, flanking Brooks and his stunned attorneys.
"Escort Mr. Brooks out of Mercer Tower," I said without looking at him. "And notify the SEC that Brooks Capital is officially in sovereign default."
