Chapter 33 - The Bedrock Countermeasure

The silence that followed was suffocating.
I looked at Alexander. For the first time since this nightmare began, I saw a flicker of profound dread in the depths of his eyes. Not for himself—Alexander had looked into the jaws of corporate death and federal ruin without flinching. But the thought of his father’s hands closing around our daughter shook him to his core.
"He won't touch her," I whispered, my voice calm, flat, and terrifyingly cold. "I didn't carry this child for thirty-eight weeks through your betrayals, through Carter's snipers, and through Elena's poison just to let a reanimated ghost take her away."
Alexander stepped toward me, his hands gently framing my face. "Eleanor, my father wrote those charters with the most ruthless legal minds in Europe during the Cold War. They are recognized under sovereign maritime treaties that bypass ordinary family courts. If he files that petition in Zurich—"
"Then we destroy the charter before he can file it," I interrupted, staring straight into his eyes. "You said yourself that William faked his death to escape an offshore liquidity indictment. Where were those original indictments stored?"
Alexander hesitated, his eyes narrowing as his strategic mind caught up with mine. "The Bedrock Archive. The subterranean vault beneath the old Mercer headquarters on Broad Street."
"Carter Vance tried to raid that vault two weeks ago," I said, my pulse accelerating. "He thought he was stealing bearer bonds. But when Marcus and I reviewed the inventory logs from the vault after Carter's capture, there was an iron lockbox embedded behind the blast door marked *Archive 1984* that Carter couldn't crack."
"The dead man's switch," Alexander murmured, breath catching in his throat. "William built that box as an insurance policy against his own partners. If they turned on him, it contained the personal identities, shell accounts, and sovereign treason charges of every man involved—including himself."
"If we open that box," I stated firmly, "we don't just prove William faked his death to evade federal prosecution. We render his legal existence invalid under international criminal law. A fugitive war profiteer cannot claim parental or guardianship rights over a sovereign child."
"It's a suicide run," Marcus warned, stepping forward from the shadow of the doorway. "The Broad Street vault is legally under federal seal following Vance’s arrest. The Southern District of New York has federal marshals stationed outside the perimeter. If we breach that vault, we are committing high treason."
"Then we commit treason," I said without a single second of hesitation. "Marcus, prepare the extraction team. Alexander... it's time you introduced me to your father's true skeleton."
Alexander looked at me, a dark, fierce pride washing over the tension in his features. He reached down to his hip, unholstering a small, matte-black keycard encased in lead.
"The vault requires two living biometric keys," Alexander said softly. "The father... and the mother. Eleanor, you are about to see the rot beneath the Mercer gold."

"I am ready," I replied, glancing back once at the room where Victoria slept under the watchful gaze of armed guardians. "Let's burn his kingdom to the ground."
