Chapter 22 - The Iron Perimeter

The armored SUV tore through the darkened labyrinth of Manhattan like a battering ram of steel and vengeance. Sparks erupted as our reinforced bumper grazed an abandoned cab on 23rd Street, but Marcus never tapped the brakes.

Beside me, Alexander was on a secure encrypted satellite headset, rallying a private army.

"Close the southern perimeter of the Hudson River Greenway," Alexander barked into the mic. "I don't care if the city thinks it’s an auxiliary NYPD drill. Any vessel leaving Chelsea Piers between Piers 54 and 62 is to be boarded or blocked by our tug escorts. If Julian Vance or anyone carrying an infant attempts to clear the dock, you are authorized to engage with lethal prejudice."

He took off the headset and turned to me. The amber light of burning street flares outside illuminated the harsh, aristocratic planes of his face. "Claire, look at me."

I turned, clutching the satellite phone against my ribs. Inside my chest, every maternal instinct was screaming, drowning out fear, replacing it with an intoxicating, crystalline hatred. "I’m looking at you."

"Carter wants the Bedrock keys because those master codes unlock the overseas sovereign escrow accounts we seized from Brooks and Vance Global," Alexander said softly, his hand covering mine. "Without those keys, he’s an escaped convict with zero liquidity. With them, he can buy half of South America and disappear forever. But he won't hurt Victoria. She is his only leverage, his only bargaining chip against the entire weight of the Mercer legacy."

"You don't know Carter like I do," I said, my voice dead and steady. "He is a narcissist who has been stripped of his reflection. When a man like that realizes the world no longer looks at him with awe, he burns down the theater with everyone inside it. He doesn't love Victoria, Alexander. He loves that she is mine. Taking her is his way of killing me without pulling the trigger."

"Then we kill him first," Alexander said simply.

We hit the West Side Highway at eighty miles per hour. The Hudson River sprawled to our right like a sheet of hammered lead. The city blackout had plunged the piers into dense, murky shadows, save for the navigation lights of a few lingering ferries and the blinding halogen beams of emergency generators illuminating Pier 59.

Marcus pulled the SUV behind a cluster of shipping containers fifty yards from the marina entrance. The engine purred into idle.

"Thermal scans," Marcus murmured, studying the tactical pad. "There’s a ninety-foot luxury cruiser tied to Slip 14. Engines are hot. Twin turbodiesels idling. We have three heat signatures on the aft deck, two on the bridge... and a solitary cluster in the salon."

"Is she there?" I choked out, pressing my face toward the screen.

"Small heat signature," Marcus confirmed, nodding grimly. "Approximately seven pounds. Steady heart rate. She’s alive, ma'am. She’s in the salon."

My breath hitched, a single tear cutting through the soot on my cheek before I wiped it away. "How are we getting in?"

"The direct approach is suicide," Alexander analyzed, drawing a compact semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster and checking the chamber with practiced grace. "Carter knows you’re coming. If Marcus breaches with tactical gear, Carter will use Victoria as a human shield. There’s only one way into that slip without tripping their deck sensors."

Alexander looked out toward the dark, churning waters of the Hudson. "The catwalk along the underside of the pier pilings. It leads directly to the stern swim platform. Marcus and I will flank the vessel from the water line. Claire, you walk through the front gate."

"I am the distraction," I stated without hesitation.

May you like

"You are the executioner's bait," Alexander corrected gently, his eyes searching mine with fierce, unyielding devotion. "Hold his attention for three minutes. Do not surrender the digital drive until I give the breach signal. Do you trust me?"

I reached out and touched his lapel, feeling the steady, calm rhythm of his heart against my palm. "I trust you with her life. Bring our daughter back, Alexander."
