Chapter 36 - The Matriarch's Demand

Alexander did not lower his weapon. He stepped out from behind the pillar, his sidearm raised and leveled directly between the older woman’s eyes.
"You died in 1994," Alexander said, his voice flat, devoid of human warmth. "I stood in the rain and watched your casket lower six feet into the earth."
The woman—Victoria Mercer—let out a soft, amused sigh, leaning her weight against her falcon cane. "A casket filled with seventy kilos of sand and cold marble, Alexander. Your father was a butcher. A paranoid tyrant who saw enemies behind every curtain. He was preparing to disinherit you when you were seven because you showed empathy. Because you wept when your horse broke its leg."
Her eyes softened, shining with a strange, unnerving devotion. "I had to vanish to survive him. I spent thirty years building an alliance with the old money houses of Europe—banking dynasties that make the Mercer fortune look like copper pennies. And three weeks ago, in a private clinic in Lausanne, I finally put an end to William. His heart could not withstand the reality that I had dismantled his empire from within."
"And Elena?" I spoke up, stepping forward beside Alexander, refusing to cower behind him. "If you are his savior mother, why did you send this viper into our home? Why did you tear our marriage apart?"
Victoria turned her piercing gaze upon me. For several seconds, she studied my face, assessing the curve of my jaw, the fierce resolve in my eyes, and the bloodstains on my coat.
"Because, Eleanor," Victoria said with chilling simplicity, "a Mercer cannot marry a fragile ornament. My son needed a partner forged in fire, not an innocent socialite living in a glass cage. I used Elena to see if you would shatter or if you would fight."
Elena stood silently to the side, her head bowed, looking not like the arrogant mistress who had taunted us over the screen, but like an obedient hound in the presence of its master.
"You passed every test, Eleanor," Victoria continued, taking a slow step forward. "You exposed Carter Vance. You neutralized Julian. You seized the Bedrock Archive. You proved that you are worthy to bear the mother line of this dynasty."
"I don't need your approval," I spat, every instinct in my body rejecting this monster's twisted validation. "You abandoned your son. You traumatized him for thirty years. And now you send mercenaries to attack us in the middle of the night?"
"I didn't come to attack you," Victoria said calmly. "I came to warn you."
She extended her gloved hand toward Elena, who stepped forward and handed her a red leather portfolio bearing an official seal of the United States Department of the Treasury.
"Carter Vance was not working alone," Victoria said, her tone dropping into dark gravity. "The men who funded him were not hedge fund managers. They were a syndicate of sovereign offshore syndicates operating out of Singapore and Dubai. They wanted the Mercer Global charter liquidated so they could seize the underlying energy corridors in South America. Now that Carter is in custody, they know Alexander will close the loop."
Victoria’s gaze fixed on Alexander’s face. "They have deployed an extraction team to your penthouse, Alexander. They don't want the ledger. They don't want the money."
My heart stopped. The world around me dissolved into pure horror.
"Victoria," I whispered, the name of my daughter choking in my throat.
May you like
"They breached the lower perimeter of Fifth Avenue six minutes ago," Victoria Mercer said, her eyes flashing with ruthless urgency. "If you want your daughter to live to see sunrise, you will get into my vehicle right now."
