Chapter 15 - The Breach at Fifth Avenue

The scandal at the Met made front-page news across three continents. Elena Moreau was escorted out of the gala in handcuffs, clutching her designer shawl over her face as camera shutters flared like lightning. The sapphire necklace was impounded as evidence in an active grand larceny and stolen property investigation.
It was a masterclass in public humiliation. But Sterling Brooks was not a man to accept defeat quietly.
At 2:00 AM, our penthouse was silent. Alexander had stayed in the guest wing to oversee the night security rotations. I had just finished nursing Victoria and had laid her down in her white oak crib. The soft whirr of the air purification system and the distant hum of the Manhattan rain provided a peaceful lullaby.
I walked into the nursery bathroom to wash my hands. When I walked back out thirty seconds later, my heart stopped beating.
On the small ivory changing table beside Victoria’s crib lay an envelope.
It had not been there two minutes ago.
The nursery was on the sixty-fourth floor. Three private security guards were stationed outside the reinforced steel door in the foyer. The biometric locks were untouched. The balcony doors were double-paned ballistic glass, bolted from the inside.
Panic, primal and terrifying, surged through my chest. I rushed to the crib. Victoria was sleeping soundly, breathing softly under her cashmere blanket, untouched.
Trembling, I reached for the envelope. It was heavy, black paper, sealed with red wax bearing the initials *S.B.*
With shaking fingers, I tore it open.
Inside were six glossy photographs.
My vision blurred with a sickening sense of déjà vu. It felt identical to the horror I experienced at thirty-four weeks pregnant when I opened the envelope revealing Carter’s infidelity.
Only this time, the photographs did not show Carter.
They showed Alexander.
The photos were taken in Geneva six months ago. Alexander was standing on a private dock, handing a heavy metal briefcase to Sterling Brooks. In the next photo, Alexander was seated across from Elena Moreau inside a private lounge, signing a document bearing the Mercer Global watermark. And beneath the photos was a single handwritten line:
*The architect who built your cage was never Carter. Ask your protector who paid off the Zurich accounts.*
A cold sweat broke across my skin. My breath became shallow, ragged gasps.
"Claire?"
I spun around. Alexander was standing in the doorway of the nursery, wearing a dark sweater and slacks, looking at me with concern. "I heard a noise on the interior monitors. Is everything all right?"
May you like
I stood between him and my daughter’s crib, my hand slipping into the pocket of my robe where I kept a small emergency panic trigger.
"Step out into the gallery, Alexander," I commanded, my voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of heartbreak and lethal rage. "Now."
