Chapter 29 - The Buried Ledger

"Carter?" I asked, cold dread threatening to surface again. "Did he try something?"

"No, ma'am. Carter Vance was successfully transferred to the maximum-security transport convoy ten minutes ago. He is en route to USP Florence in Colorado under heavy armed escort," Marcus clarified quickly. "It’s Julian."

"Julian is locked down in MCC Manhattan," Alexander stated. "His bail was denied without prejudice."

"Julian suffered an acute coronary event in his holding cell thirty minutes ago," Marcus explained, handing the tablet to Alexander. "He is currently in the cardiac ICU at Bellevue Hospital under twenty-four-hour federal guard. The doctors don't expect him to survive the night."

I walked over to the tablet, looking at the telemetry feed. Julian’s heart rate was failing, his vitals flatlining into irreversible shock.

"Before he lost consciousness," Marcus continued, "Julian requested a private notary. Under federal deathbed disclosure rules, he surrendered the physical access code to a safety deposit box at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Zurich. He told the federal agent that this wasn't an asset box."

"Then what is it?" Alexander asked, his brow furrowing as he scrolled through the encrypted transmission log.

"He called it 'The Genesis Archive,'" Marcus said. "He told the marshals: *Tell Claire that Carter was not the first man I introduced to Elena. And tell Alexander that his father didn't die of natural causes at sea.*"

The words hung in the terrace air like toxic gas.

Alexander’s body went completely rigid. The color drained from his face, replaced by an expression of pure, thunderous fury and profound shock that I had never seen on him before.

Alexander’s father, William Mercer, had supposedly suffered a fatal heart attack during a private solo sailing trip off the coast of Rhode Island nine years ago. It was that sudden, tragic death that had forced Alexander to leave the naval service and assume control of the family conglomerate at age twenty-eight.

"What did you just say?" Alexander’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the concussive force of an artillery shell.

"The federal agent recorded the exact audio, sir," Marcus answered steadily, though his eyes reflected the gravity of the revelation. "Julian claims that the Mercer maritime empire was infiltrated nearly a decade ago. He claimed Carter Vance wasn't an accidental choice—he was groomed and placed into Claire’s orbit specifically to secure the Mercer family shares through marriage."

My stomach lurched with sudden, sickening realization.

When I first met Carter at the charity gala six years ago... when he courted me with roses, when he memorized my favorite books, when he seemed to anticipate every desire and insecurity I held as a young woman struggling under the immense shadow of my family’s wealth...

It wasn't romance.

It wasn't even standard social climbing.

It was an assassination of my life, meticulously designed years before I ever said *I do*.
