Chapter 25 - The Fall of Carter Vance

The ceramic gun fired once, wild and deafening, the slug embedding itself harmlessly into the padded ceiling of the salon.

Alexander didn't hesitate. With a violent, controlled twist of his hips and shoulders, he hauled Carter backward through the shattered window frame, disarming him in mid-air with a sharp twist of his wrist that broke Carter’s index finger with a loud, distinct pop.

Carter screamed in agony as the gun clattered onto the wet carpet.

Alexander pinned him against the teak deck outside, driving a knee into the small of Carter’s back, while his hands worked with surgical gentleness to unbuckle the infant carrier from Carter’s chest.

"Secure the perimeter!" Alexander ordered Marcus, handing the carrier through the broken window frame directly into my waiting arms.

The moment Victoria touched my chest, the entire universe collapsed into silence.

"Shh, my love, my angel, mommy’s here," I sobbed, tears flowing freely down my face, washing away the blood on my lips. I pulled her from the carrier, clutching her warm, fragile little body against my racing heart. She smelled of baby powder and fresh lavender, entirely unhurt, her tiny fists curling tightly into the fabric of my sweater. She stopped crying almost instantly, burying her soft face against my neck.

Outside on the deck, the violence was swift and total.

Julian was on his knees, handcuffed with heavy-duty zip ties, bleeding from a gash over his forehead. Marcus had two tactical operatives clearing the bridge, securing the yacht’s computerized navigation logs and satellite communications.

Elena stood frozen on the pier, weeping hysterically, her hands clamped over her mouth as two unmarked Port Authority tactical units—summoned by Alexander’s private frequency—swarmed the dock with rifles raised.

Carter lay face down on the teak planks, his designer suit torn and drenched in river water, weeping in humiliation as Alexander stood over him, looking down with cold, aristocratic disgust.

"Alexander... please..." Carter wheezed, his broken finger throbbing as he pressed his cheek against the wet deck. "We were friends... I built the empire with you... don't send me back... they’ll give me thirty years in supermax for this..."

Alexander leaned down, his voice barely above a whisper, carrying a lethal finality that made Carter flinch.

"You were never my friend, Carter. You were a parasite that mistook the host’s generosity for your own brilliance. You betrayed Claire while she carried your child. You plotted with Julian to steal my family's legacy. And then you dared to lay your filthy hands on an innocent baby."

Alexander straightened up, turning his back on Carter as if he were nothing more than a pile of discarded trash.

"Marcus," Alexander commanded quietly. "Hand them over to the federal task force waiting at the pier gate. Make sure Julian’s offshore manifests, Elena’s recorded testimony, and Carter’s GPS coordinates are entered into the public record before midnight."

"Understood, sir," Marcus answered, hauling Carter roughly to his feet.

Carter looked at me one last time through the shattered salon glass. His eyes were wide, desperate, pathetic. "Claire... she’s my daughter too!"

"No, Carter," I said, my voice echoing with an absolute, unshakable authority that chilled the damp air between us. "She has my blood, my father’s name, and Alexander’s protection. You are nothing to her. You are just a ghost we buried in the river tonight."
