Chapter 37 - The Iron Alliance

The drive uptown was an unbroken blur of red tail-lights and deafening tactical chatter.
We were inside Victoria Mercer’s custom-armored Maybach, flanked by four high-speed interceptor SUVs running dark through the midnight rain of Manhattan. Alexander sat across from the woman who claimed to be his mother, his gun still resting on his knee, his eyes fixed on her face like a hawk waiting for the slightest betrayal.
"If this is a trap," Alexander warned, his voice low and vibrating with unbridled lethality, "I will end your life before we cross 42nd Street."
"If I wanted you dead, Alexander, I would have let William execute his Primogeniture order three days ago," Victoria replied, her voice unmoved. She tapped a secure tablet mounted between the leather seats, bringing up a live satellite feed of our penthouse tower on Fifth Avenue.
The visual made the bile rise in my throat.
Three black helicopters, completely unmarked with running lights extinguished, were hovering directly above the roof terrace of our home. Tactical ropes were already deployed. Heavily armed figures in grey composite armor were rappelling onto the glass dome above the grand living room.
"Who are they?" I demanded, my fingernails digging into the leather upholstery until they bled. "Who is funding them?"
"The Aurelius Syndicate," Victoria Mercer answered, her aristocratic calm cracking into razor-sharp focus. "An ultra-wealthy cartel of former Eastern European oligarchs and corrupt Western financiers. They held fifty billion dollars of illicit capital hidden within William’s old shadow accounts. When Alexander locked down the Mercer trusts and placed everything under his daughter’s sovereign name, their capital was permanently frozen. To unfreeze it, they need Victoria's genetic authorization before her first legal birthday."
"They want to use my baby as a key to an offshore vault," I breathed, horror turning instantly into an absolute, blinding rage that incinerated every shred of fear in my body.
"They will kill anyone in that penthouse who stands between them and the cradle," Victoria said, looking at Alexander. "Marcus's men are good, but they are facing thirty elite private military contractors equipped with thermal targeting and high-velocity breach charges. Your perimeter has sixty seconds before complete structural failure."
Alexander reached down into the floorboard compartment, racking the slide of an assault carbine that Victoria’s security team had laid out. He handed a secondary tactical sidearm to me.
I took the weapon. The cold steel felt heavy, dangerous, and right.
"What is the tactical layout?" Alexander demanded, leaning forward.
Elena spoke from the front passenger seat, turning around with a digital blueprint of our building. "The penthouse private elevator is secured with emergency hydraulic deadbolts. They can only enter through the terrace glass dome and the service stairwell. If we hit the lobby, we take the private executive lift directly to the 49th floor—one floor below the main residence—and flank them from the rear mezzanine."
"Elena," I said, my voice cutting through the cabin like an executioner’s axe.
She flinched, looking at me.
"If you hesitate, if you look at my husband, if you make one wrong move in that building, I will put a bullet through your spine before I engage the enemy. Do you understand me?"
Elena swallowed hard, her arrogant veneer completely stripped away, leaving only raw terror. "I understand, Eleanor. I swear on my life."
The Maybach screeched to a halt at the base of the Fifth Avenue tower. Above us, the muffled sound of explosive breach charges rattled the midnight sky.

The assault had begun.
