Chapter 12 - The Whispering Gallery

By evening, the financial district was already buzzing with toxic rumors.

When you sit atop an empire worth eleven billion dollars, a whisper in a private dining club on Wall Street can wipe out fifty million in market capitalization before trading closes. The gossip columns had picked up the scent: *The Mercer Heiress: Stolen Bloodline or Boardroom Coup?*

Alexander and I barricaded ourselves in the private penthouse library overlooking the glowing arteries of Fifth Avenue. Stacks of audited balance sheets, probate records, and notarized affidavits covered the grand mahogany table.

"The offshore money came through a private bank in Zurich," Alexander reported, tossing a folder onto the table. "Numbered accounts, masked by four layers of shell entities. But our forensic accountants managed to isolate an IP address from the routing confirmations. It originated from a townhouse on the Upper West Side."

I looked up, narrowing my eyes. "Who owns the townhouse?"

"A shell company called *Alabaster Rose LLC*," Alexander answered grimly.

My blood ran cold. *Alabaster Rose.*

It was the exact name of the bespoke perfume Carter had bought in Paris four years ago—the scent that lingered on his collars while I was enduring agonizing morning sickness alone in our master bedroom. It was the scent of Elena Moreau, Carter’s first love. The woman who had supposedly fled to South America with an empty bank account when Carter was arrested.

"She never left New York," I whispered, the realization striking me with sickening clarity. "Carter took the fall, but Elena kept the off-the-books ledgers. She was never just his mistress. She was his money launderer."

"And now she has partnered with Carter’s mother," Alexander added, stepping closer, his presence a steadying warmth against the sudden chill in the room. "They know they can't win full custody of Victoria in a fair court. But an open custody suit ties your personal estate in judicial probate. Under Mercer Global’s charter, if the Chairwoman faces an active probate inquiry regarding lineage trusts, voting rights on the international shipping lanes are temporarily suspended."

"And during that suspension," I finished, my voice hardened into polished steel, "the vice-chairs can force a public liquidation of the green maritime expansion."

"Exactly." Alexander’s hand rested on the back of my chair, his dark eyes ablaze with protective fury. "They don't want the child, Claire. They want to bankrupt you, force you to settle out of court, and walk away with half the Mercer empire."

I walked toward the baby monitor resting beside my desk. The screen glowed soft blue, showing Victoria sleeping peacefully in her crib down the hall, clutching her miniature plush rabbit, unaware of the wolves circling her name.

"They think I am vulnerable because I am a mother," I said softly, turning back to Alexander, my eyes shining with an icy resolve. "They forgot who built this house. Call Julian. Arrange a private transport to Otisville tomorrow morning at dawn."

Alexander blinked, surprised. "You're going to see Carter?"

"I am going to remind him what happens when someone touches my daughter."
