Chapter 24 - Blood on the Hudson

"Don't do it, Carter!" a third voice screamed from the darkness of the pier behind me.

Carter’s eyes widened in shock. Julian’s hand snapped toward the concealed weapon in his cane.

Emerging from the shadows of the warehouse wall, shivering violently in a damp trench coat, was Elena.

Her face was pale, mascara streaked down her cheeks, her hands empty and raised in surrender. She looked utterly broken—a phantom of the glamorous socialite who had seduced my husband in luxury hotel suites while I was carrying his child.

"Elena?" Carter stammered, his composure cracking for the first time. "What the hell are you doing here? You were supposed to be on the flight out of Teterboro!"

"They were going to kill me, Carter!" Elena wept, pointing an accusatory, trembling finger at Julian. "Julian’s men locked me in the private terminal lounge! I overheard their radio comms! Once the yacht cleared the harbor, they were going to execute me and dump me in the Atlantic! Julian never intended to let either of us live!"

Julian didn't blink. His expression remained utterly serene, the cold mask of an assassin who considered human life nothing more than entries on a balance sheet. "Elena was always a loose thread. Surely, Carter, with your intellect, you realized that three passengers on a fugitives' manifest is two too many."

"You son of a bitch!" Carter roared, shifting his posture.

That fraction of a second—that microscopic fracture in their alliance—was all the opening Alexander needed.

*CRACK!*

A flash of muzzle fire erupted from beneath the stern swim platform.

The heavy slug from Alexander’s weapon struck the halogen deck light, plunging the aft deck into semi-darkness. In the same heartbeat, two figures vaulted over the stern railing with terrifying speed and precision.

Alexander moved like a shadow given lethal form. Before Julian could raise his cane, Alexander struck him with a devastating shoulder tackle, slamming the older man against the yacht’s teak dining table with a sickening crunch of splintering wood and breaking ribs. The silver cane clattered across the deck and plunged into the dark river below.

"Marcus! Cover the bridge!" Alexander roared.

"Carter!" I screamed, lunging up the gangway.

Carter panicked. Realizing he had been flanked, he spun toward the salon door, attempting to lock himself inside the cabin with Victoria.

"Get away from me!" Carter shrieked, fumbling with the latch.

I didn't think. I didn't strategize. Every ounce of maternal fury that had simmered in my veins for nine months exploded. I cleared the gangway in three strides, throwing my entire weight against Carter’s back before the heavy glass door could slide shut.

We tumbled into the salon together. Carter hit the carpet hard, rolling onto his shoulder to protect the carrier.

Victoria woke up. Her sharp, terrified wail pierced the chaotic darkness like a knife through my soul.

"Give me my daughter!" I screamed, clawing at Carter’s face, my fingers finding his eyes, tearing at his skin.

"Get off me, you crazy bitch!" Carter yelled, throwing a wild backhand that struck my cheek, sending stars exploding across my vision. The taste of copper flooded my mouth.

He scrambled to his feet, pulling a small ceramic revolver from his ankle holster. He aimed it straight at my forehead, his chest heaving, his face bleeding where my nails had gouged his flesh.

"I’ll kill you, Claire! I swear to God I’ll put a bullet through your head right now!"

"Shoot me," I whispered, rising to my knees, wiping the blood from my lip, staring straight down the black barrel of the gun. "Shoot me, Carter. Because if you don't kill me in the next three seconds, I will tear you apart with my bare hands."

May you like

Behind him, the salon window shattered inward in a shower of diamond-sharp safety glass.

Alexander’s arm snaked through the opening, locking around Carter’s neck in a brutal, crushing sleeper hold.
