Chapter 20 - The Echo in the Cradle

My breath vanished. My hand trembled so hard the champagne flute shattered on the limestone floor, crystal shards and sparkling wine scattering across our shoes.
"Julian?" I choked out, grabbing Alexander's arm. "Julian, where are you?"
"I am in the master nursery, Claire," Julian’s voice replied through the phone.
His voice was calm. Unnervingly, terrifyingly calm. There was no tremor of fear. No hesitation. Only the cold, methodical cadence of a man who had completed a lifelong assignment.
"Julian, step away from that room!" Alexander snarled into the phone, turning and sprinting toward the private executive elevators, dragging me along with him. "If you touch that child, I swear to God I will tear you apart with my bare hands!"
"You always were an emotional protector, Alexander," Julian sighed softly over the line. "Arthur knew that. That’s why he kept you on the perimeter. But Arthur never trusted anyone with his real legacy. He certainly didn't trust you, Claire. You were always too soft. Too willing to believe Carter Vance was the only viper in your garden."
The elevator doors chimed and closed, plummeting us downward toward the private garage where our armored convoy waited. My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. Tears streamed down my face as I screamed into the phone.
"Julian! My father treated you like a brother! I trusted you with my daughter’s life!"
"Arthur didn't treat me like a brother, Claire," Julian murmured, his voice laced with decades of quietly buried venom. "He treated me like an obedient servant. He built an eleven-billion-dollar empire while my family starved in the shadow of his maritime expansion. Did you really think Carter Vance came up with the idea to betray you on his own? Who do you think introduced him to Elena four years ago?"
The horror was suffocating. It felt like falling through endless, black ice.
Julian. The trusted advisor. The quiet man who poured the tea, who filed the paperwork, who held Victoria on the penthouse lawn. He had orchestrated Carter's betrayal. He had pulled the strings behind the scenes from the very beginning.
"The board battle was indeed a distraction, Claire," Julian whispered. "While you and Alexander were busy destroying Brooks, the true asset transfer was finalized. Victoria is a beautiful child. She will grow up in Europe, with a completely new identity, under the care of those who truly appreciate the Mercer wealth."
"Julian, please!" I sobbed, the elevator doors sliding open to the garage. We sprinted toward the black SUV, tires screeching against the concrete. "Take the money! Take everything! Leave my baby!"
"It's too late for negotiations, Claire," Julian said.
Suddenly, through the speaker, the sound of the nursery's antique music box began to play—the gentle, haunting melody of Brahms' Lullaby.
Then, the sharp sound of an encrypted frequency clicked. A second voice came over the line—a familiar, mocking, chilling voice that had supposedly been transferred to solitary confinement in Otisville this morning.
"See you soon, Claire," Carter's voice whispered.
The call went dead.
At that exact second, every light in the garage flickered and died. A city-wide emergency siren began to wail across the Upper East Side as a total electrical blackout swallowed the skyline in pitch-black darkness.
My phone screen glowed in the dark.
