Chapter 31 - The Ghost of Geneva

The air on the penthouse terrace froze into razor-sharp glass. Below us, the muted roar of Manhattan rolled on indifferent to our horror, while high above Fifth Avenue, the reality of Marcus’s words seemed to tear through the very fabric of our reality.
*William Mercer II — Status: Active.*
My arms tightened instinctively around Victoria. Her tiny fingers twitched against my chest, her warm, milky scent a fragile anchor in the middle of an erupting storm. Only moments ago, we had stood under the twilight believing the nightmare of Carter Vance and Elena’s betrayal was finally behind us. We had thought the battlefield was clean.
Instead, the grave had just split wide open.
"Alexander," I whispered, my heart slamming against my ribs with brutal force. "How is this possible? You told me you identified his body yourself eight years ago."
Alexander did not blink. His face had hardened into stone, the vein at his temple throbbing with a violent cadence. "A closed-casket transport from Zurich," he said, each syllable dropping like lead. "A catastrophic private jet crash in the Bernese Alps. The DNA matches were confirmed by Interpol and the Swiss Federal Police. The estate was settled. The tax levies were cleared. I paid two hundred million dollars in repatriation fees to bury him in the family crypt at Sleepy Hollow."
"Then who signed that digital ledger four minutes ago?" I demanded, looking down at the screen.
Marcus spoke, his voice clipped and strained. "The biological key requires an active sub-dermal biometric pulse, Mrs. Mercer. Retinal alignment, high-frequency vascular mapping, and a localized genetic marker. It cannot be duplicated by artificial intelligence, nor can it be extracted from a deceased specimen. Whoever signed that sovereign reinstatement is breathing. And they possess the master encryption keys to the Mercer Family Founding Charter."
"And Elena?" Alexander’s voice dropped to a lethal register. "Where did the extraction convoy take her?"
"They cleared the Sprain Brook corridor heading toward Westchester County Airport," Marcus replied, his thumbs flying across the tactical interface. "A Gulfstream G650 registered under the sovereign diplomatic flag of San Marino was idling on the private runway. It departed the airspace three minutes ago. Flight plan filed directly for Zurich Kloten."
A suffocating chill settled over me. "Elena wasn't working alone. She never was. Carter Vance was an attack dog, Julian was a desperate hedge-fund vulture... but the architect who funded her, who taught her how to mirror my life, how to plant those photographs, how to dismantle this family from the inside—"
"It was my father," Alexander cut in, his hands clenching into fists so tight his knuckles turned bone-white. "William Mercer never retired. He never died. He merely watched from the dark to see if I was ruthless enough to survive him."
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite terminal on the glass table emitted a low, resonant chime.
It was not a standard incoming call. The screen shifted from Marcus's tactical feed to a pure black background. A single line of gold typography pulsed across the center of the display:
*THE PATRIARCH DOES NOT APOLOGIZE FOR TESTING HIS HEIR.*
Victoria let out a soft whimper. I stepped closer to Alexander, our shoulders touching as a terrifying shadow fell over our sanctuary.
"Get the infant below ground," Alexander commanded Marcus without looking away from the screen. "Initiate the Sovereign Fortress lockdown. If a sparrow crosses within five hundred feet of this penthouse without clearance, shoot it out of the sky."
"No," I spoke up, my voice steady despite the adrenaline tearing through my veins. "Victoria stays with me. We don't hide like prey, Alexander. If your father has come back from the dead, he wants something. And whatever it is, he will have to pry it from our cold hands."
May you like
Alexander looked down at me, the darkness in his blue eyes meeting the unyielding fire in mine. The bond we had rebuilt through blood and deception didn't fracture under the weight of this new ghost. It hardened into steel.
