Chapter 16 - Fractured Loyalties

The library doors closed behind us with a heavy, ominous thud.

I threw the black photographs onto the center of the mahogany desk. They scattered across the polished wood like fallen leaves of poison.

Alexander looked down at them. His expression did not change to fear or panic. Instead, a profound, agonizing sorrow settled over his handsome face. He closed his eyes for a long moment and let out a slow, ragged breath.

"Where did you get these?" he asked quietly.

"They were left on the changing table in my daughter's nursery five minutes ago!" I yelled, the fury tearing through my throat. "Someone bypassed your security team, Alexander! Someone stood three feet from my child! And this was what they left me!"

Tears of pure betrayal burned behind my eyes. "Were you working for Brooks? Was everything—the board coup, the takeover defense, the late nights, the tenderness—was it all just a long con to position yourself at the throat of my father’s empire?"

Alexander didn't flinch, even as my words cut into him. He took one slow step forward, keeping his hands visible, palms open.

"Claire, listen to me carefully. I have never lied to you about who I am or where my loyalty lies."

"Then explain Geneva!" I demanded, pointing a trembling finger at the photo of him handing the briefcase to Brooks. "Explain why you were meeting the man who is trying to destroy Victoria!"

"That briefcase contained sixty million dollars in non-traceable bearer bonds," Alexander said, his baritone steady, deep, and unyielding. "Your father, Arthur Mercer, gave them to me on his deathbed."

I froze. "What?"

"Arthur knew he was dying, Claire. And he knew Carter Vance was a parasitic sociopath who would eventually sell out the company. But Arthur had a darker secret. Thirty years ago, Arthur and Sterling Brooks’ father entered into an offshore mining syndicate that failed. Sterling’s father went to prison, and Arthur walked away clean."

Alexander reached into his jacket and pulled out a leather-bound notebook with Arthur’s unmistakable handwriting across the cover.

"Arthur swore an oath to ensure Brooks never came for you," Alexander explained, his eyes locking onto mine with absolute honesty. "He hired me ten years ago not just as an investment strategist, but as a sentinel. In Geneva, I bought three months of peace from Brooks with those bonds. I thought I could buy enough time for you to give birth, secure your voting shares, and establish full control."

"And the photo with Elena?" I whispered, my heart aching.

"I was buying the original hard drives Carter used to blackmail the board," Alexander said softly, taking another step until he stood right before me. He gently reached out and touched my cold, trembling hands. "Elena double-crossed me. She took the payment, kept copies of the drives, and sold them to Brooks anyway. Brooks staged those photographs to look like a conspiracy."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Arthur made me swear on his grave that you would never carry the burden of his sins," Alexander whispered, his thumb brushing a stray tear from my cheek. "You were building an empire of light, Claire. I took it upon myself to handle the mud."

I looked into his dark eyes, searching for even a speck of deception. There was none. Only an ancient, fierce devotion that went far beyond boardrooms and balance sheets.

"The breach," I whispered, the dread returning. "If Brooks could get those photos into the nursery..."

"He didn't bypass security from the outside, Claire," Alexander said, his eyes darkening with lethal clarity. "He has an insider on our staff."
