Chapter 43 - The Unwelcome Specter

The black sedan parked outside the Geneva chalet did not linger in the shadows for long before its headlights flickered to life, cutting a sharp beam through the thick alpine fog. Adrien stepped away from the roaring fireplace, his hand instinctively dropping toward the concealed holster beneath his tailored jacket as the intercom chimed with a crisp, automated alert from the front gates. The security detail on duty crackled through the encrypted comms, reporting that a single visitor had approached the perimeter—not bearing weapons or threats, but holding an official diplomatic summons bearing the seal of the Swiss federal court. "Let them in," I instructed calmly, my voice steady as I turned away from the window to face the heavy oak doors of the foyer. Moments later, the heavy brass handle turned, and a tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal-grey trench coat stepped into the warmth of the chalet. It was Elena Vance—Marcus’s estranged sister, who had spent the last decade distancing herself from the family's criminal empire while quietly building her own legal dynasty in Geneva. Elena looked around the grand room before her eyes finally locked onto mine, a complex mixture of remorse, exhaustion, and cautious respect etched into her sharp features. "I didn't come here to ask for your mercy, Eleanor," Elena began, her voice carrying a fragile, trembling weight. "I came to warn you that Marcus’s trial is a facade—someone high up in the European banking sector is trying to buy his freedom before the final evidence is entered into the Geneva registry."
