Chapter 21 - The Lyon Inheritance

The sound of the foghorn out on the Atlantic vibrated through the reinforced glass of the nursery windows, a deep, mournful drone that seemed to curdle the freezing rain lashing against the coast of Maine. I stood frozen, my hand trembling against the warm, steady back of my sleeping son. Julian let out a soft sigh, his tiny chest rising and falling in rhythmic innocence, completely oblivious to the gathering storm both outside and within the walls of our sanctuary.

Adrien didn’t move. His tall frame was outlined by the harsh, flickering glare of the emergency flashlight as he stared down at the tarnished silver rattle and the parchment note resting on the changing table. The silence in the room stretched like a pulled wire, humming with the terrifying realization that our impenetrable fortress had just been breached.

"Read it again," I whispered, my voice sounding hollow even to my own ears. "It’s a hoax. It has to be. Marcus is locked away, and the Vance estate is secure. How could anyone... who knows about Lyon?"

Adrien slowly picked up the heavy parchment between his thumb and forefinger, his jaw set like granite. "The House of Laurent in Lyon isn't common knowledge, Elena. Twenty-five years ago, a massive scandal shook the French aristocracy. A newborn heir vanished from the private maternity ward of a clinic in the south of France—a clinic owned by the Laurent family. The case went cold within forty-eight hours. Interpol suspected an inside job, but no trace of the child was ever found."

My breath hitched. "Are you saying...?"

"I’m saying the Vance name, powerful as it is in Boston and New York, is a drop in the bucket compared to the ancient bloodlines of old Europe," Adrien said, his dark eyes meeting mine with a fierce, protective intensity that cut through my panic. "And if this note is authentic—if your true lineage traces back to the Laurents—that changes everything. Marcus wasn't just obsessed with destroying you because of a grudge; he was hunting something he didn't even fully understand."

"And now they're here," I said, looking out toward the dark, churning ocean where the silhouette of the massive, unmarked yacht loomed against the lightning. "Adrien, what do they want with Julian?"

"They believe he is the key," Adrien replied coldly, slipping the note into his pocket and reaching into his jacket to check the slide of his Sig Sauer P226. "The direct line of succession. If the Laurent direct heirs are gone, the entire empire—shipping ports across the Mediterranean, vineyards in Bordeaux, and billions in liquid assets—reverts to the nearest blood relative. To you, Elena. And through you, to Julian."

"I won't let them touch him," I said, my voice dropping an octave as a cold, fierce maternal rage surged through my veins, pushing aside the fear. I scooped Julian up against my chest, wrapping his heavy quilt around him. He stirred sleepily, nuzzling his face into my collarbone. "I walked away from Marcus with nothing because I refused to be a pawn in his games. I won't let some shadow from Europe use my son as leverage in a war of dynasties."

"You won't have to," Adrien vowed, stepping to the door and checking the corridor outside. "The perimeter guards are down, which means our communication arrays inside this sector have been jammed. We have one way out before they dock: the subterranean vehicle tunnel leading to the mainland highway."

As if in answer to his words, the overhead lights flickered once, twice, and then died completely, plunging the entire estate into pitch blackness.
