Chapter 27 - The Standoff at the Lodge

The tension in the cabin was so thick it felt tangible, a suffocating weight that pressed against my chest. Adrien’s pistol was locked dead on Viktor’s chest, but the three tactical operatives surrounding us had their sights trained squarely on Adrien’s back. One wrong twitch, one sudden breath, and bullets would tear through the room.
"Think carefully, Viktor," Adrien said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any panic. "The moment you pull this trigger, the federal authorities in Boston and Washington are automatically pinged. My private security protocols are set to upload our exact GPS coordinates to the Department of Justice if I don't check in every thirty minutes. You won't make it to international waters before the Coast Guard intercepts your yacht."
Viktor’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing his cold, aristocratic features. He knew the Vance family’s political reach in the United States was vast and deeply entrenched.
"You overestimate your influence, Adrien," Viktor said smoothly, though his eyes narrowed slightly. "Governments change. Bureaucrats can be bought, delayed, or silenced. But bloodlines are eternal. Do you really think I came here unprepared for a little American bureaucracy?"
As if on cue, the muffled sound of a helicopter rotor beat against the heavy rain outside. The rapid, thumping chop of blades grew louder by the second, descending directly above the clearing behind the hunting lodge. A powerful searchlight cut through the forest canopy, flashing blinding white beams through the shattered windows of the cabin, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
"An extraction chopper," I whispered, my heart racing. They weren't just relying on the yacht—they had air support.
Viktor took a slow step forward, his eyes locked on Julian’s face peeking out from behind my shoulder. "Hand the boy over, Elena. Do not make this harder than it has to be. You can come with us as his mother, or you can stay here in the ashes of your little American life. The choice is yours."
"I have another choice," I said quietly.
Before Viktor could process my words, I grabbed the heavy brass fire poker from the hearth and smashed it directly into the glass oil lamp resting on the side table. The lamp shattered instantly, sending flaming kerosene spilling across the wooden floorboards.
The fire roared to life in a blinding wall of orange flames, leaping across the rug and cutting a blazing barrier between us and Viktor’s men.
"Now, Adrien!" I screamed.

Adrien didn't hesitate. He fired two rapid shots into the wooden support beams above the door, bringing down a cascade of heavy ceiling timbers right on top of the operatives, blocking their line of fire. Grabbing my arm, he hauled me toward the kitchen’s emergency exit as the entire cabin erupted into smoke and fire.
