Chapter 37 - The Final Confession

Caterina stood frozen on the snowy terrace, the wind howling around us like a pack of starving wolves. Her finger trembled against the trigger of the Walther PPK, her eyes darting frantically between Adrien’s unyielding weapon and the tactical helicopters hovering menacingly overhead. She knew she was checkmated. There was no escape, no hidden backup, and no offshore account left untouched.

Slowly, with a bitter, defeated hiss, Caterina’s fingers relaxed. The silver-plated gun slipped from her grip, clattering sharply against the frozen stone of the terrace before sliding over the edge and disappearing into the dark, bottomless abyss of Lake Geneva far below.

"It doesn't matter," Caterina whispered, her shoulders slumping as the rigid aristocratic posture finally broke. She laughed—a hollow, broken sound that carried no humor, only decades of consuming bitterness. "You can arrest me, you can freeze the accounts, you can hand the foundation back to the Laurent name. But you can never erase what we started. Marcus and I... we built a dynasty on the ashes of your family's hypocrisies."

"You built an empire of sand," I said, stepping past Adrien to stand face-to-face with my husband’s former tormentor. I reached down, pulling the heavy, cold metal of the Laurent signet ring from my pocket, letting it catch the pale light of the helicopter searchlights. "And dynasties built on deceit always crumble when the rightful heir comes home."

Before Caterina could retort, heavy tactical boots echoed across the marble floor of the study behind us. Three members of the Thorne security division swarmed onto the terrace, their movements swift and practiced. In a matter of seconds, Caterina’s wrists were locked in heavy titanium zip-ties, her resistance completely neutralized.

"Secure the perimeter and prep for extraction," Adrien ordered, never taking his eyes off Caterina as she was led away toward the waiting helicopter.

As they escorted her through the doorway, Caterina stopped, turning her head for one final, venomous look. *"Enjoy your victory, Elena,"* she spat over the roar of the rotor blades. *"The Geneva Vault is open. And once you open the inner chamber, you'll see that the Laurent family sins run far deeper than you could ever possibly imagine."*

The heavy doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice as the security detail bundled her into the chopper. Within moments, the aircraft lifted off the snowy terrace, turning its nose toward Zurich and leaving Adrien and me alone in the freezing mountain air.

Adrien immediately holstered his weapon, stepping forward and pulling me into his arms, wrapping his heavy tactical jacket around my shoulders to shield me from the biting alpine wind.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice thick with a raw, protective intensity that he reserved only for me. "Did she touch you? Did she say anything else?"

I leaned into his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart against the cold night air. The tension that had gripped my muscles since the moment the Geneva signal first chimed in our Boston study finally began to melt away.

"I'm fine," I murmured, resting my cheek against his shoulder. "She's gone, Adrien. It's really over."

May you like

"Not quite," Adrien said softly, tilting my chin up with his gloved hand so I had to look into his dark, searching eyes. "She mentioned the Geneva Vault. The inner chamber. If Caterina left a final trap inside the bank, we need to spring it ourselves—on our terms."
