Chapter 25 - The Safehouse in the Woods

Twenty minutes later, the Maybach emerged from the dense timberland, pulling up beside a secluded, rustic hunting lodge nestled deep within the private Vance family game reserve. The cabin was completely dark from the outside, but as Adrien punched the security sequence into the heavy oak door, an internal generator hummed to life, flooding the entryway with warm, golden light.

"We're safe here—for the next few hours at least," Adrien said, locking the heavy deadbolts behind us and sweeping the rooms with his weapon drawn before lowering it. "No one knows about this property except my personal security detail. It’s shielded from satellite surveillance by the heavy canopy and deep granite ridges."

I let out a long, ragged breath, collapsing onto the leather sofa by the stone fireplace. Julian was still sleeping soundly, the motion of the drive having lulled him back into a deep slumber. I carefully unbuckled the carrier and laid him down on a plush quilt spread out over the couch, watching him for a long moment to ensure he was truly unharmed.

Adrien walked over to the fieldstone fireplace, tossing a few dry logs into the grate before lighting a match. Flames crackled to life, casting a warm, flickering glow across the room. He poured two glasses of scotch from a crystal decanter on the sideboard, handing one to me before taking a seat across the coffee table.

"You need this," he said quietly, his dark eyes studying my face. "You saved us back there, Elena. Your composure kept Julian safe."

I took the glass, letting the amber liquid burn my throat, grounding me in the reality of the present moment. "Composure is all I have left, Adrien. But we can't keep running forever. Every time we move, they find us. How are they tracking us so fast?"

Adrien fell silent for a moment, swirling the scotch in his glass. "Because it's not just digital tracking anymore. When you carry the bloodline of the Laurent dynasty, you carry a cryptographic registry tied to global banking trusts. There are biometric beacons embedded in certain historical artifacts—like the silver rattle they left in the nursery."

My eyes widened. "The rattle..."

"It wasn't just a threat," Adrien nodded grimly. "It was a beacon. It emits a low-frequency radio signal that short-range receivers can track within a ten-mile radius. I left it back on the changing table, but they didn't need it once they breached the perimeter—they already had a lock on our personal vehicle transponders."

"Then we need to strike back," I said, setting the glass down on the table with a sharp click. "If we keep playing defense, they will eventually corner us. Who in Lyon is behind this?"

"A man named Viktor Laurent," Adrien said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Your grandfather's younger brother—your great-uncle. A ruthless patriarch who controls the European shipping syndicates. He spent decades trying to eliminate anyone who stood between him and the total control of the family trust. If he believes Julian is the rightful heir to the entire estate, he won't stop until he controls the child—or eliminates him."

Before I could reply, the low, steady hum of the cabin's emergency generator suddenly sputtered, hitched, and died completely.
