Chapter 26 - Darkness in the Cabin

The warm golden light of the lodge vanished in an instant, plunging the entire room into absolute, pitch-black darkness. The only illumination came from the dying embers of the stone fireplace, casting long, writhing shadows against the wooden walls.
"Stay down," Adrien hissed, his voice cutting through the sudden silence like a razor blade.
I didn't hesitate. I dropped to the floor beside the sofa, throwing my arms over Julian as he stirred, letting out a confused, sleepy cry. I pulled him tight against my chest, whispering soothingly into his ear while my eyes strained against the dark.
The heavy oak front door didn't just open—it exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and iron bolts.
Through the ruined doorway, a tall silhouette stepped into the room, framed by the pale, stormy light of the forest outside. The figure wore an expensive Italian wool overcoat, completely dry despite the torrential rain, and walked with the unhurried, arrogant stride of a man who owned the world.
"Adrien Vance," a smooth, cultured European voice echoed through the cabin, dripping with polite malice. "And, of course, my brilliant, elusive grandniece, Elena. How poetic that we finally meet under such... rustic circumstances."
Adrien stepped in front of the sofa, his pistol raised and aimed dead-center at the intruder's chest. "Step one more foot into this room, Viktor, and I'll put a bullet through your heart."
Viktor Laurent stopped, a faint, amused smile playing on his aristocratic lips. He didn't even glance at the barrel of the gun. Instead, he raised a gloved hand, and three more armed operatives slipped past him into the cabin, their tactical weapons instantly locking onto Adrien from the shadows.
"Put the gun down, my dear boy," Viktor said, his tone dripping with patronizing condescension. "You are playing a game of chess against a grandmaster. Every move you've made over the past six months was anticipated from the very beginning."
"You breached federal security, Viktor," Adrien said, his voice like grinding ice, though he didn't lower his weapon. "You think you can just kidnap an American citizen on U.S. soil and walk away?"
"Kidnap?" Viktor chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "My dear Adrien, I am simply reclaiming what rightfully belongs to the House of Laurent. The boy is a direct descendant of the primary bloodline. He is the sole heir to the Lyon empire. Elena knew this, of course—why else do you think she fled from Marcus Vance so cleanly? She knew the wolves were circling, and she tried to hide the cub."
I gently shifted Julian behind my back, keeping my body shielded while my hands searched the floor for anything I could use as a weapon. My fingers brushed against the heavy brass poker beside the hearth.
"I didn't run because of your empire, Viktor," I said, my voice cutting through the smoky air with absolute, unyielding clarity as I slowly stood up from the floor, holding Julian securely in one arm. "I ran because men like you treat human beings like currency. I won't let you touch my son."
Viktor turned his gaze toward me, his cold, piercing eyes scanning my face with clinical detachment. "Ah, the fierce mother. So brave, yet so utterly naive. You think you can defy centuries of power with a stubborn glare, Elena? The yacht waiting at the private dock in Bar Harbor is already fueled. In less than twelve hours, we will be in international waters, heading back to France. The boy will be raised in his rightful place—whether you come willingly or not."

Adrien’s finger tightened on the trigger. "Try it."
