Chapter 33 - The Dead Sister’s Ledger

The name *Caterina Vance-Laurent* hung in the air of the study like a foul-smelling fog. I stared at the screen, my mind racing back through every detail of Marcus’s betrayal, every cold glance he had given me during our marriage, and the haunting way he had spoken of his first love before casting me aside.

"She never died," I whispered, tracing the glowing letters with my index finger. "The plane crash was a fabricated headline. My grandfather arranged it to cover up a corporate embezzlement scandal that nearly brought down the entire Swiss banking cartel in the nineties."

Adrien walked over, setting Julian down on the plush rug with a handful of wooden building blocks before stepping up beside me. He leaned in, his broad shoulders brushing against mine as he examined the encrypted dossier pulling up from the hidden archives.

"Look at the corporate structure," Adrien murmured, pointing a long finger at a complex web of shell companies spanning from Zurich to the Cayman Islands. "Marcus wasn't just cheating on you with some random college sweetheart. Caterina was orchestrating the entire union from the shadows. She engineered your marriage to Marcus, she orchestrated the theft of your anniversary necklace, and she used your family's assets to fund her private war against the Laurent trusteeship."

"She wanted everything," I said, a cold, hard anger settling deep into my bones. The fear I had felt moments before evaporated, replaced by the lethal clarity of a woman who had already lost everything and had nothing left to fear. "She wanted the foundation, the estates, and the bloodline."

"And now she's backed us into a corner," Adrien added, his jaw tight. "Seventy-two hours. That's the window she gave us before she liquidates the entire trust."

"Then we don't wait for her next move," I said, standing up straight and smoothing down the fabric of my tailored trousers. I looked down at Julian, who was happily stacking two wooden blocks together, completely oblivious to the war being waged around him. I walked over, dropped to one knee, and kissed the top of his soft curls. "Mommy has to take care of some business, sweet boy. Daddy will keep you safe right here."

Adrien knelt beside me, his hand resting firmly on my shoulder. "You're not going alone, Elena. If Caterina wants a war, she's going to get the full weight of both the Thorne and Laurent empires descending upon her Geneva stronghold."

"No," I said, turning to look him straight in the eye. "Caterina called out my name. She wants the rightful heir of the Laurent bloodline to walk into her trap voluntarily. If you come with me as my husband and tactical backup, she’ll trigger the liquidation protocols before our private jet even crosses the Atlantic."

"Elena—"

"Listen to me, Adrien," I interrupted, my voice ringing with absolute, unshakable authority. "You stay here with Julian. Lock down the estate. Activate the orbital defense relays. Give me forty-eight hours to penetrate her inner circle alone. If I don't check in by the end of the second day, *then* you bring down the thunder."

Adrien stared at me for a long, agonizing moment, his tactical mind weighing the probabilities, the risks, and the sheer impossibility of letting me walk into the lion’s den alone. Slowly, a grim, respectful nod cut through his hesitation. He reached into his jacket, pulling out a small, matte-black device no larger than a coin, and pressed it firmly into my palm.

"A quantum tracker and encrypted comms relay," Adrien whispered, his thumb brushing over my knuckles. "If you press this once, I know you're compromised. If you press it twice, I burn her entire operation to the ground, international laws be damned."
