Chapter 23 - The Highway to Nowhere

The armored Maybach tore through the torrential rain, its high-beam headlights slicing through the dense sheets of water that blurred the coastal highway into a streak of grey and black. Inside the cabin, the dashboard glowed with warning lights, but the engine was purring like a caged beast, engineered to withstand ballistic impacts and heavy pursuits.
I sat in the back, gently unwrapping Julian from the heavy blanket to check him over. His big, wide eyes blinked open in the dim glow of the instrument panel. He looked up at me and gave a tiny, toothless yawn, completely unfazed by the terrifying chaos of the past twenty minutes. A wave of overwhelming relief washed over me, mixing with the hot, bitter tears I had managed to hold back until now.
"He's okay," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. "Mommy's got you, sweet boy."
In the front seat, Adrien kept one hand firmly on the steering wheel while his eyes darted constantly to the rearview mirror. The road behind us was pitch black, swallowed by the raging storm, but the tense set of his shoulders told me the danger was far from over.
"They aren't just local thugs," Adrien said, his voice hard as flint. "The gear they were wearing, the suppression tactics—those were former special forces operatives. European contract killers. Someone with immense wealth and state-level clearance has put a target on our backs."
"Because of the Lyon inheritance?" I asked, shifting Julian so he rested comfortably against my shoulder, gently patting his back. "Adrien, who could possibly have known we were here? We changed our locations three times in the last six months. We were ghosts."
"Ghosts to ordinary people, maybe," Adrien replied, navigating a sharp curve on the slick coastal road at eighty miles an hour. "But high-end intelligence networks leave digital and financial footprints. The moment Marcus was arrested, federal asset tracking systems flagged his connections to your maiden name. Someone in Europe was watching the court filings. They connected the dots between your mother’s lineage and Julian’s birth certificate."
"And they want to take my son to secure a dynastic bloodline," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "They think because I left Marcus with nothing, I'm weak. They think I'm just a runaway wife they can push around."
Adrien glanced at me in the rearview mirror, a faint, grim smile touching the corner of his lips. "They have no idea who they're dealing with. You walked out on a billion-dollar empire without looking back, Elena. You aren't weak. You're the most dangerous woman I've ever known."
Before I could answer, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights suddenly flared in the rearview mirror, appearing out of nowhere like two burning eyes in the storm. A massive, black SUV—unmarked and heavily armored—was closing the distance at terrifying speed, barreling through the rain without its lights on until the very last second.
"Hold on!" Adrien yelled, slamming his foot down on the accelerator.

The Maybach surged forward, but the pursuer was gaining ground, its heavy front bumper crashing directly into our rear quarter-panel with a sickening metallic crunch that echoed over the roar of the wind.
