Chapter 18 - Blood and Iron

At that precise moment, the double mahogany doors of the Custom House burst open.
Four agents in dark windbreakers bearing the yellow initials *SEC - Enforcement Division* marched into the ballroom, flanked by two armed federal marshals.
The lead investigator, a severe woman with silver hair pulled into a severe bun, walked straight to Marcus Vance.
"Marcus Thorne Vance?" she announced, her voice ringing off the vaulted ceilings.
Marcus spun around, his eyes wide with unadulterated terror. "What... what is this?"
"I am Agent Ramirez with the Federal Financial Enforcement Task Force," she stated, displaying her badge. "We have an active warrant for your arrest on twelve counts of wire fraud, witness tampering, and unlawful conversion of corporate assets related to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Zurich."
"This is absurd!" Harold Stern, Marcus's attorney, pushed through the crowd, waving his hands. "My client is a respected philanthropist! This is an administrative misunderstanding!"
"It ceased being a misunderstanding three hours ago, Counselor," Agent Ramirez replied coldly, "when Mr. Adrien Sterling’s compliance team delivered three unencrypted ledgers documenting seventy-two million dollars in unauthorized transfers routed through Geneva holding accounts—including the original purchase and liquidation records of the Ceylon sapphire parure."
Marcus swung his head around, his eyes locking onto Adrien with wild, venomous disbelief. "You... you did this?"
Adrien looked down at him, unblinking, his hand gently resting over mine. "I told you on the driveway in Maine, Vance. I don't negotiate with trespassers. And I don't let thieves hover around my family. When you audit a pirate ship, you sink the fleet."
The federal marshals moved forward with practiced efficiency. Marcus’s hands were pulled behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the silent ballroom, a sound far more definitive than any gavel.
Genevieve let out a shriek of laughter, but her triumph was short-lived. Agent Ramirez turned to her with an identical set of documents. "Genevieve Dubois? You are named as an unindicted co-conspirator and accessory to financial extortion. You're coming with us as well."
The color drained from Genevieve’s face as the second marshal stepped behind her.
As Marcus was led past us toward the exit, the press cameras outside flashing through the glass entryways, he lunged toward me one last time, his voice breaking into a pathetic, desperate sob.
"Elena! Tell them! Julian... Julian needs me! You can't let them take his father away!"
I looked him straight in the eyes, my heart completely untethered, floating high above the wreckage of his ruined empire.

"Julian doesn't need a felon, Marcus," I whispered with brutal, unyielding grace. "He already has a father. And unlike you... he doesn't need to steal to keep him."
