Chapter 22 - The Subterranean Escape

The red glow of the battery-powered emergency strips along the floor cast long, eerie shadows as Adrien led me down the winding stone staircase toward the subterranean garage. Every footstep echoed against the reinforced concrete walls of the shelter beneath the Brattle Street house, sounding like warning gunshots in the quiet dark.
"Stay close behind me, Elena," Adrien muttered, his pistol raised, sweeping the corners as we rounded the landing. "The jamming signal means they've deployed localEMP generators. Our cell phones are dead, and the security feeds are fried. We are completely on our own."
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Julian was tucked securely inside the baby carrier strapped tightly to my chest, his little head pressed against my heart. He had fallen back into a deep, peaceful sleep, entirely unaware that the ground beneath our feet was turning into a battlefield.
We reached the heavy steel blast door at the end of the corridor, the entrance to the underground parking vault where Adrien’s armored Mercedes-Maybach SUV was parked. Adrien punched the override code into the digital keypad, but the screen remained dead, flickering a dull, lifeless grey.
"Damn it," he cursed under his breath, striking the metal casing of the keypad with the heel of his hand. "The power surge fried the electronic locks."
"Is there a manual release?" I asked, scanning the dark corridor behind us, straining my ears for any sound—a footstep, a creak of a door, the whisper of approaching danger.
"There’s a mechanical hydraulic lever behind the wall panel," Adrien said, dropping to one knee and tearing the plastic access hatch off the drywall. Inside, a heavy iron lever coated in grease waited in the gloom. "Hold Julian tight."
With a grunt of pure physical exertion, Adrien heaved the lever upward. The heavy hydraulic cylinders hissed with a loud, pneumatic sigh, and the massive steel door slowly ground open, revealing the dim, cavernous expanse of the underground garage.
The beam of Adrien’s flashlight cut through the damp air, bouncing off the sleek black hood of the Maybach. But as we stepped inside, a sudden, metallic click echoed from the shadows near the far wall.
"Freeze!" a voice barked—sharp, cold, and dripping with an accent that wasn't American.
Two figures stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, dressed in matte-black tactical gear with no insignia, their assault rifles leveled squarely at our chests.
Adrien didn't hesitate. In one fluid motion, he raised his pistol and fired twice. The deafening cracks of the gunshots shook the concrete vault. The lead operative crumpled instantly, his rifle clattering against the floor. The second mercenary dove behind a concrete column, returning fire. Bullets chipped off the stone wall inches from my head, sending a stinging shower of grey dust into my eyes.
"Get in the car, Elena! Now!" Adrien shouted, firing suppressing rounds as he shoved me toward the passenger side of the Maybach.
I scrambled into the back seat, pulling Julian down into the footwell and curling my body over his small form to shield him from any stray glass or bullets. The sound of rapid-fire echoed like thunder in the enclosed space.

The engine roared to life with a ferocious growl. The Maybach surged backward, its tires squealing against the concrete, smashing through the remaining barrier of the garage gate as we plunged headfirst into the freezing, rain-swept Maine night.
