Chapter 55 - Chains in the Hold

The interior of *The Sovereign Dawn* was not a pleasure vessel; it was an oceanic war room. Reinforced steel bulkheads, biometric scanners at every hatch, and banks of high-frequency satellite terminals lined the main deck.
Julian stayed glued to my right flank as Marcus led us down a spiral staircase into the lower hull. The smell of diesel fuel and salt gave way to the sterile odor of ozone and chilled air.
Behind a panel of two-inch ballistic glass sat Daniel. The cell was four paces wide. He had no shoes, no watch, and sat on an iron cot bolted to the floor. Across from him, mounted on a steel desk, was a ruggedized military laptop waiting for a multi-tiered password entry.
"Valerie isn't in federal custody either, is she?" I asked Marcus, watching Daniel clutch his bandaged ribs behind the glass.
Marcus stopped in front of the observation window. "Valerie thought she was clever. When the FBI raided the penthouse two nights ago, she didn't run to the airport. She had a safe passage arranged through the Vance private shipping terminal in Boston. But Victor Vance abandoned her the moment the public scandal broke. Right now, Valerie is hiding in an abandoned coastal villa forty miles north of here, protected by five disgraced private contractors who haven't realized yet that her wire transfers have bounced."
A cold thrill ran down my spine. "She thinks she still has the Vance money."
"She thinks she has seventy million dollars," Marcus said. "In reality, Daniel moved those funds into a blind trust twelve hours before his arrest, hoping to use them to buy his own immunity. Neither of them trusted the other. Their entire affair was built on mutual extortion."
Marcus keyed the intercom on the glass. Daniel jumped at the static, scrambling to his feet and pressing his hands against the transparent barrier.
"Serena! Serena, tell him!" Daniel pleaded, his voice distorted through the small speaker. "I gave you Harbor House! I signed the deed over! I have nothing left!"
"You didn't give me Harbor House, Daniel," I said into the microphone, my voice steady and cold. "I took it back with a gavel and a forensic audit. Now, tell me about the Gardenia Trust."
Daniel’s face lost what little color it had left. "How... how do you know about that?"
"My mother wore gardenias," I said, leaning toward the glass until my reflection mingled with his terrified face. "The night she died in that private clinic, the air smelled of gardenias. And yesterday, when I broke open the safe behind your wardrobe, the only offshore company registered under your secret LLC was called Gardenia Holdings. You didn't just steal from me. You were siphoning her personal trust long before Marcus allegedly died."
Daniel looked past me to Marcus. The older man’s hand tightened on the silver head of his cane until his knuckles turned ivory.
"Enter the key, Daniel," Marcus said, his tone chillingly soft. "Enter the key, or I open that airlock beneath your feet and let the Atlantic do what it should have done seven years ago."
With shaking hands, Daniel dropped to the stool before the laptop. His fingers hovered over the keys for five agonizing seconds before he began typing. With every keystroke, Daniel’s empire—the shell corporations, the luxury penthouses, the hidden bearer bonds he had stolen from my family—unraveled on the external monitors behind us.
"Transfer complete," Julian observed, reading the cascading green text on the wall screen. "Eighty-two million dollars. Redirected directly to the Harbor House Foundation, registered in Serena Montgomery’s name."
Daniel collapsed forward, burying his face in his hands, weeping like a broken child.
I turned my back on him. "Let him stay here until the federal marshals arrive with an official transport under Julian's personal oversight. I don't want him dead, Marcus. I want him in a federal penitentiary where he will watch my name on every television screen for the next thirty years."

Marcus watched me, pride and sorrow warring in his gaze. "Done. Now, my girl... we need to talk about Valerie."
