Chapter 47 - The Midnight Duel

As if summoned by her words, the high whine of diesel engines and the harsh glare of tactical high-beams pierced through the rain-streaked windows from the estate's long driveway.

Julian’s earpiece flashed frantic red. Clara’s voice screamed over the comms, half-drowned by static: "Serena! Breached perimeter at the north gates! Three black SUVs—heavy armor, private military contract markings! They’re not Daniel’s men. They’re flying the black flag of the Kane Syndicate!"

"Kane’s remnants," Julian cursed, spinning toward the courtyard windows. "Valerie brought the cartel’s private enforcers to secure the extraction."

"They’re not here for an extraction," Valerie sneered, her voice trembling with manic triumph as she stood on the rain-swept terrace threshold. "They’re here to liquidate Harbor House and everyone inside it. Marcus Kane’s heirs don't leave loose ends, Serena. I traded your life for safe passage to South America. Seventy million is enough to buy an army."

"You sold our family home to the men who murdered Father?" The words tore out of my throat, hot with pure rage. All calculation vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, primal fury.

I didn't reach for a gun. I surged forward, kicking a heavy mahogany armchair directly into her path. Valerie swung the silver letter opener in a blinding arc, the steel tip slicing through the shoulder fabric of my white dress, grazing the kevlar plate beneath.

I caught her wrist in a vise-like two-handed lock, driving her backward through the shattered glass doors and out onto the open stone terrace.

The storm hit us with violent force. Rain fell in sheets, instantly soaking us both. The salt spray from the churning sea below mixed with the cold rain, turning the slippery flagstones into an icy trap.

Valerie fought like a cornered animal, using her weight to drag me toward the low stone balustrade that overlooked the two-hundred-foot plunge into the black ocean. Her heels slipped, her free hand gouging at my eyes. "Die with your empire, Serena!"

I locked my hips against the balustrade, refusing to yield an inch. With a sudden downward snap of my forearms, I broke her grip, twisting her arm until the silver blade clattered harmlessly against the stone and bounced over the edge, swallowed by the darkness.

Below us in the courtyard, gunfire erupted. Julian’s heavy rifle roared in rhythmic, controlled three-round bursts, answering the chatter of automatic weapons from the syndicate’s armored vehicles. Harbor House had become a war zone.

Valerie scrambled backward against the wet railing, clutching her fractured wrist, her ivory suit ruined, her hair plastered across her face like black ink. "Kill me, then," she spat, her chest heaving. "Pull the trigger or throw me over. But you won't survive the night. Kane’s men will tear this house down brick by brick."

I stood over her, the rain washing the foundation stains from my white gown, my eyes boring into hers.

May you like

"I’m not throwing you over," I said, my voice cutting through the howl of the storm. "You’re going to sit in the front row of the federal courthouse, Valerie. And you’re going to watch me rebuild everything you tried to destroy."
